Government surveys are routinely deposited with the UK Data Archive for reuse via ESDS. The extent of information on housing and the local environment varies from dataset to dataset, but the files have certain features in common.

Poor housing conditions are both a predictor and an outcome for a range of social and health statuses which makes their measurement important. For researchers wanting to test the association between housing and health across national boundaries, the European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) offers the most comprehensive survey resource.

Qualitative studies that deal with housing and local environment form an increasing selection of the collections at the UK Data Archive. These themes have traditionally been a core interest amongst many social scientists and they are therefore represented by both classic and contemporary studies.

Longitudinal surveys differ from cross-sectional studies in that the same cases (individuals or households) are observed repeatedly over time. This is useful to researchers who wish to identify developments in the target population and establish sequences of events. The British Household Panel Survey (BHPS), conducted by the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Essex, is one such longitudinal survey which tracks over 5500 households in the UK.
