Teaching with ESDS data

The ESDS is the UK’s national one-stop data portal for accessing an extensive range of key economic and social data, both quantitative and qualitative, spanning many disciplines and themes. ESDS offers support for the secondary use of data across the research, learning and teaching communities.

ESDS provides support in many areas of teaching research methods aside from secondary analysis of data:
  • research design
  • survey design and analysis
  • software for analysis data
  • secondary analysis of qualitative data
  • managing research data
  • consent and ethics
TEACHING DATASETS

The ESDS Data Catalogue contains over 5,000 datasets with more than 35 tailor-made or sampler survey datasets for teaching purposes.

Data Catalogue

These datasets are typically subsets of the larger UK government surveys, making them easier for students to handle. Both the study methods and data can be downloaded, free of charge.

There are also over 15 teaching datasets in the ESDS Nesstar Catalogue where data can be browsed and visualised online without the need for local statistical analysis software.

BEST PRACTICE GUIDANCE ON MANAGING AND SHARING DATA

Data created from research are valuable resources that can be used and re-used for future scientific and educational purposes. Sharing data facilitates research often beyond the scope of the original research, encourages scientific inquiry, avoids duplicate data collection and provides resources for education and training.

Data management booklet

ESDS has years of expertise in implementing and training in best practices in data management and methods of data sharing, including: consent, confidentiality and ethics; copyright, data documentation and metadata; data formats and software and data storage; back-up and security.

These are all core skills for the researcher of tomorrow.

ESDS RESOURCES

ESDS provides a wide range of resources to assist teachers and students of research methods:
  • teaching datasets
  • guides on datasets and using data
  • thematic pages, e.g. on health and crime
  • training events and workshops
  • information on data sharing and data management
  • guidance on confidentiality, consent and ethics
  • case studies of re-use
  There are also guides covering:
  • research design
  • survey design and analysis
  • software for analysing data
  • secondary analysis of qualitative data
  • managing research data
  • consent and ethics

Case studies using international data

ESDS collates case studies of use from researchers who have used the ESDS international macro databanks.

These help provide a better understanding of: what users actually do with data, including the research questions; which data were chosen; how the data were handled; and a review of results.

SPSS workbooks for dissertation students

ESDS hosts workbooks that focus on the skills students need in order to work with a real world secondary survey dataset, including looking at published sources, accessing data, weighting, selecting cases and data manipulation.

Each workbook is based round a research question and ESDS dataset and concentrates on SPSS software.

BHPS teaching sampler datasets in Nesstar

ESDS has created cut down sampler datasets of the British Household Panel Study (BHPS) which can be accessed via Nesstar.

They contain wave one respondents and follow them for eleven waves. The datasets are in rectangular format rather than the usual hierarchical structure which can be a complex task for a new user.

Themed samplers cover: work, family and health; time use, leisure and social memberships; and social and political attitudes.

Resources for teaching research qualitative methods

ESDS provides online resources specifically designed to assist in re-using data to teach qualitative methods.

The first resource provides introductions to seven distinct interviewing techniques while the second focuses on four commonly used qualitative methods: focus groups; diaries; online data collection; and visual methods.

Each resource uses examples from important collections held in the UK Data Archive, and concludes with practical suggestions on how to use the materials in methods teaching.
