Determinants and consequences of atypical employment – Professor Werner Nienhueser (Universität Duisburg-Essen – Department of Economics and Business Administration). September 2011
Firstly I am interested in the causes and consequences of different forms of atypical employment (compared to "normal" employment). Secondly I want to find out how institutions - different forms of regulations, especially labour law and collective agreements - moderate the causes and effects of atypical employment. For instance, what is the influence of Equal Pay and Equal Treatment on the effect of temporary agency work on work satisfaction and working conditions? Are these effects different in different institutional settings?

Background research for PSE Survey – Ms Kirsten Besemer (Heriot-Watt University – School of the Built Environment). September 2011
"Poverty and Social Exclusion in the United Kingdom" is a major research project funded by ESRC. Launched in May 2010, the research will be completed in 2013. The research will develop and repeat the 'Poverty and Social Exclusion Survey in Britain in 1999' (funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation), which itself followed 'Breadline Britain in the 1990s' and 'Breadline Britain 1983'. It will therefore be the fourth in a series of nationally representative surveys that use a consensual measure of minimum necessary living standards and direct measures of material and social deprivation rather than solely relying on proxy income data. In early stages of the research, data will be gathered from a number of different datasets from representative large sample studies in order to review current knowledge of the realitionships between poverty and different aspects of social eclusion with standard demographic variables. As part of the Heriot Watt team, my main focus will be on the social distribution of internet use, housing problems, access to services and neighbourhood effects.

Use and impact of 'new' management practices in the UK – Dr Sara Connolly (University of East Anglia – Economics). September 2011
'New' or 'innovative' management techniques, involving significant use of teamwork and consultation, the sharing of information and the greater reliance on performance related pay and appraisal systems, have been associated with improved corporate performance in parts of US industry. This project explores whether similar 'new' HR practices are now found in the UK and whether they tend to be used as a single package, whether they work better in conjunction with unions and what characterises those organisations that adopt these practices.

Non-voting in Britain 1963--2010. The role of policy indifference and alienation – Ms Jane Roberts (University of Oxford – Social Studies). September 2011
Using BES data from 1963 to 2010 this study analyses the determinants of nonvoting. Previous research has included the usual suspects of covariates, but little attention has been paid to predictions derived from formal models of voting. By conceptualising vote choice and abstention as a function of policy preferences and policy positions offered by parties, we derive new predictions conceding the role of policy indifference and alienation.

Fiscal and distributional impact of social care reform – Mr Jose Iparraguirre (Age UK). August 2011
The aim of this research is to estimate the additional public expenditure and the distributional impact of alternative policy recommendations, stemming from the Dilnot Commission's report "Fairer Care Funding". Our objective is to estimate how many people would be affected by changes in the proposed cap and mean-test threshold, as well as the likely fiscal implications of alternative measures. Age UK wants to contribute to the general conversation about social care reform and be prepared for a forthcoming consultation and White Paper which will very likely take Dilnot's paper as background work but could suggest alternative policy measures, such as different cap and threshold levels.
The Dilnot Commission has drawn its recommendations upon estimates and simulation projections based entirely upon the Wealth and Assets Survey. Therefore, we need access to this dataset in order to estimate the impact of alternative policy measures if the government decides to introduce changes in the original proposals by the Commission.

Effects of breastfeeding on children's outcomes – Dr Emla Fitzsimons (Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) – Economics). August 2011
The causal effects of breastfeeding on children's outcomes such as health and cognitive development are little understood. The problem is that breastfeeding is a choice made by parents, and so any associations between breastfeeding and outcomes may be confounded by broader socio-economic factors. Even if we control for these as best we can, there is still the concern that there are unobserved factors that simultaneously affect the decision to breastfeed and children's outcomes. The aim of this project is to identify the causal effects of breastfeeding on children's outcomes, including cognitive and non-cognitive measures, and health. We will identify the causal effects of breastfeeding on children's outcomes using the method of instrumental variables, a technique that recognises that breastfed and non-breastfed children would have different average outcomes even regardless of whether or not they were breastfed, most likely because they differ in background characteristics.
The method involves modelling the breastfeeding decision, as a function of all important characteristics in the decision. We believe hospital of birth to be one such important factor. Indeed there is much heterogeneity in UK hospitals in terms of breastfeeding support. The MCS is an ideal data set to use to address our research questions: on the one hand it has extremely detailed information on pregnancy, labour, delivery and feeding practices, and on the other, very detailed information on child measurement and assessment. The breastfeeding decision will be modelled in an econometric framework as a function of a variety of characteristics including those of the mother (such as age, education level, ethnicity, presence of other children, marital status), and the hospital of birth. This will be carried out using both linear and discrete models in STATA.

Modelling the effect of reducing sugared beverage consumption on sugar intake and obesity in adults – Dr Damilola Olajide (University of Aberdeen – Applied Health Sciences). August 2011
The aims of this project are to identify the level of reduction in sugared beverage consumption required to make an impact on dietary and health outcomes and to explore alternative regulatory or voluntary methods of achieving change. The research will: (i) provide robust estimates for Scotland of the effect that a sugared beverage tax would have on consumption, body mass index (BMI) and Scottish brands; and (ii)investigate the potential to affect consumption of sugared beverages. The Living Costs and Food Survey data will be used to estimate a system of demand equations to capture the effect of price increases on sugared beverage consumption and substitution effects to other products.

Poverty and Social Exclusion 2011 – Mr Nick Bailey (University of Glasgow – Urban Studies). August 2011
I am part of a group of academics conducting a once-every-ten-years survey of poverty and social exclusion in the UK, funded by the ESRC. The study is based around two main quantitative stages: a survey of public opinions about 'the necessities of life', and a survey of who has access to these 'necessities'. The latter is to be conducted as a follow up to the FRS. This major initiative will: 1. Improve the measurement of poverty, deprivation, social exclusion and standard of living. 2. Measure the change in the nature and extent of poverty and social exclusion over the past ten years. 3. Produce policy-relevant results about the causes and outcomes of poverty and social exclusion.

London Parish Boundary 1600 – Mr Tsering Shawa. March 2011
I am helping a faculty member with her project.."I am working on a demographic study of women in London ca. 1600 using the autobiographical information supplied by deponents for the consistory court. Deponents routinely stated their parish of residence and what parishes they had lived in for the past decade or so; as well as their parish of birth. This information is particularly interesting where migrants to the city were concerned; as it contradicts some standard assumptions about where migrants settled. To illustrate consistory court witnesses' residence patterns and movements; I am seeking to create a map of London and the suburbs around 1600 that will show the boundaries of the suburban parishes as they were before they were subdivided in response to London's extraordinary growth."
