Guide to ESDS Qualidata Online
ESDS Qualidata offers flexible access to digital qualitative data, via the ESDS web-based download system and
online browsing of data. The ESDS Qualidata Online project represents the second phase of work on developing
online access to qualitative data using XML standards and tools.

The exercises will take the user through the following areas of the ESDS Qualidata Online site:
- searching interview transcripts
- searching interview summaries
- browsing thematic extracts in interview transcripts
- listening to audio clips
- exploring images and contextual information

Stage 1: simple keyword search
Select from the top menu of the
ESDS Qualidata site . Choose
from the top menu, then from the left-hand menu.
This study, Family Life and Work Experience Before 1918 (The Edwardians), comprises 444 life story interviews
conducted in the early 1970s with people born before 1918, and represents ESDS Qualidata's most popular data.

To locate information in the interview texts that pertain to leisure pursuits of Edwardians, select
from the left-hand menu, and choose in
the main body of text. This links to a new screen
with search and browse facilities. Select Edwardians in the Collections drop-down menu to identify the relevant collection
to search. A keyword search can be performed by inserting a term into the Search for box to identify relevant documents and
relevant passages of text. Type in the word hobbies, and click on the Submit button.

Stage 2: free-text search of interview summaries
|
The interview summaries for this dataset provide categorical information
about the interview subject (date of birth, sex, final occupation and
occupational class etc.) and a structured summary by theme (family,
marriage, housing etc.) of the full interview text.
Select from the left-hand menu. Enter the word illness in the Free-text box, and click
on the Search Now button. This will find the summary records
for all full-text interviews transcripts that contain a passage relating to
illness.

Stage 3: thematic browsing

In the original research project the interview transcripts were coded
using a system of 19 themes relating to the subject of family life and
work experience. Select from the left-hand menu, then

Stage 6: project methodology
Each data collection in the ESDS Qualidata Online system is accompanied by a description of the project
methodology, publications by the principal investigator and by secondary users, and also, where possible, press
reviews etc. These kinds of materials help contextualise the data. This information is found
