Guide to ESDS Qualidata Online

ESDS Qualidata offers flexible access to digital qualitative data, via the ESDS web-based download system and online browsing of data. The ESDS Qualidata Online project represents the second phase of work on developing online access to qualitative data using XML standards and tools.

ESDS Qualidata online screenshot The exercises will take the user through the following areas of the ESDS Qualidata Online site:
  • searching interview transcripts
  • searching interview summaries
  • browsing thematic extracts in interview transcripts
  • listening to audio clips
  • exploring images and contextual information

Stage 1: simple keyword search

Select Online from the top menu of the ESDS Qualidata site www.esds.ac.uk/qualidata. Choose Data collections from the top menu, then Edwardians from the left-hand menu.

This study, Family Life and Work Experience Before 1918 (The Edwardians), comprises 444 life story interviews conducted in the early 1970s with people born before 1918, and represents ESDS Qualidata's most popular data.

To locate information in the interview texts that pertain to leisure pursuits of Edwardians, select Explore data from the left-hand menu, and choose search transcripts in the main body of text. This links to a new screen with search and browse facilities.

Select Edwardians in the Collections drop-down menu to identify the relevant collection to search.

A keyword search can be performed by inserting a term into the Search for box to identify relevant documents and relevant passages of text. Type in the word hobbies, and click on the Submit button.

Stage 2: free-text search of interview summaries

The interview summaries for this dataset provide categorical information about the interview subject (date of birth, sex, final occupation and occupational class etc.) and a structured summary by theme (family, marriage, housing etc.) of the full interview text.

Select Interview Summaries from the left-hand menu. Enter the word illness in the Free-text box, and click on the Search Now button. This will find the summary records for all full-text interviews transcripts that contain a passage relating to illness.

Q2.1 How many did you find?

search summaries

Stage 3: thematic browsing

In the original research project the interview transcripts were coded using a system of 19 themes relating to the subject of family life and work experience.

Select Thematic Coding from the left-hand menu, then Browse Thematic Coding to find interviews relating to Children's leisure.

thematic coding

Q3.1 Identify interviewees in religious occupations. How many extracts did you find? Look at individual extracts and View all extracts.

Q3.2 As a child, did Revd. B. enjoy dancing? What about theatre?

Q3.3 Select Extract 1, and then View extract in context. Do you agree that the text above and below the (yellow) extract is NOT about children's leisure?

Stage 4: other interview material

Users who have not already logged in should do so now.

Go back to the Interview Summaries page. Search on vicar in the Free-text box. Check the box for Revd W Frank B, click on the Retrieve records button, and go to the top of the record. Explore the link to Other Interview Material.

Q4.1 Where was the Reverend located as a missionary in 1925?

Stage 5: multimedia - picture gallery and audio extracts

thematic coding

Go back to the Data collections page, select Edwardians from the left-hand menu, then Multimedia followed by Photo gallery, all from the left-hand menus.

Q5.1 How many men made up a fire crew in 1907? [Tip: Browse the photos or use Control-F(ind) and search on fire.]

To listen to sound extracts, select the Audio option in the Multimedia menu. There are example clips that are also linked directly to their context in the full interview transcript. Listen to the first one for Mr. Clifford H.

Q5.2 Who sat behind the choir in church?

To read the text while listening to the interviewee speaking, select the View this extract in the interview transcript link below the audio clips.

Stage 6: project methodology

Each data collection in the ESDS Qualidata Online system is accompanied by a description of the project methodology, publications by the principal investigator and by secondary users, and also, where possible, press reviews etc. These kinds of materials help contextualise the data. This information is found under Project Background on the left-hand menu for Edwardians. Take a tour of this section of the web site.
