Social and Political Implications of Household Work Strategies, 1978-1983
Pahl, R.E., University of Kent at Canterbury. Faculty of Social Sciences.
Date of Release: 16 December 2004
Abstract: This includes original material from three related studies: Isle of Sheppey Survey, 1981 (SS81); The Social and Political Implications of Household Work Strategies, 1982 (HWS) and 1983 (HWS83); as well as the small pilot study of 1978 (HWS PIL). These projects examined the way in which households in a selected local labour market deployed their collective time, energies and resources to get work done. Work may be done in the formal economy as employment, in the house as domestic work, and, more informally, as a favour or for cash. The effect of opportunities for full or part-time work on the relative balance between these different kinds of work was explored. The 1982 and 1983 studies used a sub-sample of the much larger 1981 survey of householders.
The collection comprises: 951 questionnaire extracts; 20 other questionnaires; 64 audio-cassette tapes; 34 transcripts; and 29 thematically organised transcripts.
Main Topics: Household work strategies; household; family life; community life; labour and employment; unemployment; home-based work; casual employment; employment opportunities; subsidiary employment; neighbours; political behaviour; political allegiance; kinship; income.

Goldthorpe, J.H., University of Oxford. Nuffield College,
Bechhofer, F., University of Edinburgh. Research Centre for Social Sciences.
Date of Release: 16 December 2004
Abstract: The Affluent Worker project was undertaken during 1961-1962 to test empirically the thesis of working class embourgeoisement. Married male workers from three Luton factories were interviewed at work and then, once again, with their wives at home. Additionally, a sample of white-collar workers from the same factory were interviewed at home. This material formed the basis for one of the most influential sociological publications of the 1960s; The Affluent Worker in the Class Structure. Aside from the book there were also two long reports based upon the project.
In addition to the research material gathered in Luton, this collection also includes a substantial set of pilot interviews (300+) with teachers, grocers, bank employees and factory electricians, made in the Cambridge area.
Main Topics: Ambition; aspiration; British Labour Party; children; class consciousness; class differentiation; community; education; employment; factory workers; family life; friends; household budgets; industrial sociology; industrial workers; job security; leisure time activities; life styles; middle class; parent-child relationships; politics; political allegiance; social change; social class; social life; social mobility; social stratification; social structure; society; technology; trade unions; wages; working class.

Impact of Family Change on Older People : the Case of Stepfamilies, 1994-1996
Bornat, J., Open University. Department of Health and Social Welfare.
Date of Release: 2 December 2004
Abstract: This project was concerned with the effects on the lives of older people of the changing structure of the family through separation/divorce and re-marriage. The main points of interest were: caring for older people; ties between the generations; grandparenting; and changes in the ways resources, e.g. property and money, are exchanged between family members. The two year project combined the use of a range of qualitative methods, including genograms describing family structure, and life history interviews with family members from at least two generations in order to develop an understanding of how stepfamilies experience issues relating to their older generations.
Main Topics: Ageing; broken families; care of the elderly; common-law marriages; divorce; family; family life; family relationships; family role; grandparents; inheritance; kinship; marital separation; old age; property.

Women and Conflict Archive, 1947-1995
Bennett, O., The Panos Institute.
Date of Release: 2 December 2004
Abstract: This project involved interviewing women in conflict-affected areas in Vietnam, Somaliland, Uganda, India, Sri Lanka, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Lebanon, Tigray, Croatia and Bosnia and Liberia.
The project was designed to increase understanding of women's actual and potential roles within communities both during and after conflict, and was conceived in response to the fact that development activities were increasingly being affected by civil unrest, war and its aftermath. There was a particular desire to understand more about the impacts on women, and their responses to conflict. This reflected the increasing recognition of women's crucial role - social and economic - in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of families and societies. This project sought to complement existing texts by gathering material which was personal, wide-ranging, and based on first-hand experience. The testimonies reveal the views and experiences of women as fighters, participants, refugees, victims caught between warring factions, organisers for peace and rehabilitation, carers, mothers, relatives and partners of the dead and disappeared.
The collection comprises 189 interview transcripts, 49 interview summaries, 8 indexes of themes and 1 glossary. The text of the transcripts have not been altered or corrected. Twenty-six are in Spanish.
Main Topics: Women; war; conflict; victims of war; civil war; terrorism; refugees; politics; peace; death; families; households; communities; violence; mothers; children; health.
The full catalogue record for Women and Conflict Archive, 1947-1995 (SN 4900) is available from the UK Data Archive.

Changing Sociological Construct of the Family, 1930-1986
Pahl, R.E., University of Kent at Canterbury. Faculty of Social Sciences.
Date of Release: 2 December 2004
Abstract: This study uses in-depth interviews to build up a picture of one large and complex working-class family. Using a small sample from the population of the Isle of Sheppey, the interviews cover sources of support and help for family members. The relative importance of neighbours, family and official state-provided services are also examined. "We were interested in everything, from help with marital problems to day-to-day assistance with baby sitting or borrowing the traditional cup of sugar".
The research supports the proposition that the family is best understood as a system of relationships that change over time. Findings also question the view that equate the family with the household.
Main Topics: Families; family life; kinship; households; life cycle; marriage; child care; everyday life; neighbours; friends; community life; employment; household income; working class.

Investigation into the Social Construction and Consequences of the Label Epilepsy, 1974-1975
West, P., University of Glasgow. MRC Medical Sociology Unit.
Date of Release: 6 October 2004
Abstract: This project focused principally on 24 families with an epileptic child. It aimed to treat the meaning of epilepsy as a central research issue and thus to examine the source and manner by which the meanings of epilepsy were constructed. All were interviewed at least once.
The principal objectives were, to understand: a) the kind of knowledge about epilepsy available to parents, by reference both to lay and 'expert' frameworks, b) how such knowledge shaped parents' typifications and expectations about their own child, c) the variety of 'responses' to the child displayed by others, inside and outside the family, d) the nature of parents' interpretations about the child's identity and behaviour and the manner in which this might sustain their 'responses' towards him.
The collection is incomplete as some parts were lost prior to deposit. However, for each of the 24 families studied there is a fieldwork file consisting of in-depth interviews, notes from informal contacts and telephone conversations, observations of family life, as well as notes taken from the hospital records (hospital notes); observations of hospital visits (hospital observations); interview guides and the researcher's own analysis guides made during the research project. Where tapes of the interviews survive, these are also included in the file.
This data collection also includes 61 surviving accounts of observations of doctor-patient consultations and the surviving 'street survey' interviews. In a few instances the original tape recordings have also been retained.
Main Topics: Epilepsy; health; health services; physicians; paediatrics; doctor-patient relationship; medical consultations; families; family life; children; parents; illness; personal identity; hospital services; public opinion.

AIDS Relevant Cognitions in Dundee and Kirkcaldy, 1987-1989
Abrams, D., University of Kent at Canterbury. Department of Psychology.
Date of Release: 8 September 2004
Abstract: The primary aim of this research project was to map out HIV-relevant beliefs and behaviours amongst a sample of teenagers and students in Dundee and Kirkcaldy and to track influences on their behaviour using longitudinal analyses. Another important aim was to evaluate models of the cognitive pre-requisites of behaviour in the context of HIV. The study was based in Dundee because of its high incidence of HIV transmission but distinctly conservative sexual mores and culture (e.g. in comparison with Edinburgh or London)and as a relatively homogeneous and distinct social environment. Transcripts of 108 interviews were gathered. Comparisons were made between groups on the basis of gender, age, area of residence, involvement in full time education, and whether or not the issue of AIDS would be particularly salient for them (e.g. gay men and GUM clinic attenders).
Main Topics: AIDS; HIV; sexual behaviour; condoms; social attitudes; social behaviour; risk; risk perception; public health; peer group relationships; Dundee; Kirkcaldy; Scotland; United Kingdom.

Andrews, M., University of East London. Department of Human Relations.
Date of Release: 6 September 2004
Abstract: This project aimed to examine the way in which internal critics of the former GDR made sense of the recent changes which had happened in their country. The following themes were given special attention: the affect of age on perceptions of the former East German state and its demise; the relationship between social transformation and the evolution of language; the importance of working through the past for the establishment and maintenance of individual and social identity in the present; and the meaning of forgiveness and its relationship to justice.
The collection was based on 42 interviews which produced 81 audio tapes, 22 summaries and 18 transcripts.
Main Topics: Politics; political action; political change; political development; political movements; totalitarianism; socialism; Marxism; history; life histories.

Gender Divisions and Gentrification, 1960-1992
Bondi, L., University of Edinburgh. Institute of Geography.
Date of Release: 31 August 2004
Abstract: The aim of this project was to investigate the significance of gender as a factor in processes of gentrification, and to explore the interplay between changing gender divisions and urban change. The research was based on a comparison of three local areas in Edinburgh, one where gentrification began in the late 1960s, one where gentrification began in the early 1980s, and one modern suburb. The local case studies were developed using data from the Register of Sasines and other documentary sources, together with semi-structured interviews with consumers and producers of private sector housing. The research findings endorse the view that non-family households in general and women in particular are important agents of gentrification. However, no support was found for the widespread assumption that attitudes to gender roles and household gender divisions of labour are any more "traditional" in suburban areas than in areas subject to gentrification. The study shows how the relationship between gender practices and location is mediated by factors including the presence or absence of children, class differences and geographical origins.
Main Topics: Building design; class; community participation; domestic responsibilities; demography; employment; gender; gentrification; home buying; home ownership; home sales; housing; housing finance; housework; neighbours; neighbourhoods; public transport; tenants home purchasing; shopping; urban development; urban life; urban renewal; urban traffic.

Doctors and the Development of Hospital Computer Systems : a Case Study, 1981-1985
Dent, M., Staffordshire University. Department of Sociology.
Date of Release: 31 August 2004
Abstract: A computer system was introduced into the outpatient's clinic of a hospital in the Midlands in 1981, under the leadership of a consultant. The objective of the system was to replace the hand-written case notes with printed, structured reports and clinical summaries on patients. It also sought to make available facilities for analysing clinical data on groups of patients, in order to facilitate higher standards of patient care and to stimulate medical research.
The aim of the research was threefold; firstly it was to study the impact of the computer based medical record system on the clinical work processes within an outpatient clinic. Secondly it was to study the politics of the decision-making processes involved within the district and the hospital. Finally it was to identify and analyse the responses of the doctors to the computer system. The research method consisted mainly of interviews with a sample of consultants on three separate occasions; once prior to computerisation, again one month after computerisation and again five months later. in addition a number of junior doctors were interviewed, one month after taking up their post. A total of 32 interviews were deposited.
Main Topics: Medical information systems; computer systems; hospital administration; hospitals; management; medical records; doctors; medical staff; job training.

GP Consultations and Concepts of Illness : Asians in Bristol, 1987-1989
Fenton, S., University of Bristol. Department of Sociology.
Date of Release: 31 August 2004
Abstract: Conducted in 1987 - 1989, this study aimed to document and interpret conceptions of health and illness used by doctors and patients; and to show that the way in which people think about their health affects their consultation with a doctor. This study concentrated on patients of South-Asian ancestry where misunderstandings in the medical situation are often compounded by the lack of a shared language and little appreciation of differences in custom and outlook. Some of the misunderstandings result from very basic differences in the way doctors and patients feel about such concepts as 'the body', 'hot' and 'cold', and 'feeling well'.
Main Topics: Asians; women; health; health services; doctor-patient relationships; medical treatment; mental illness; depression; racial minorities; racial prejudice; cultural change; language barriers; food customs.

Scientists in Industry, 1964-1967
Cotgrove, S.F., University of Bath. School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Date of Release: 25 August 2004
Abstract: This research project examined a series of problems which have been generated by the fact that science is no longer mainly an academic activity. Industry is now one of, if not the largest, single employer of scientists. There has been much debate about the drift from science and the failure of industry to recruit the best graduates. Do universities produce 'academics' who find the prospect of industry uncongenial? Does industry fail to make the most of the skills and capacities of its highly qualified graduates? These are some of the issues investigated in this study.
Main Topics: Science; technology; industry; scientists; employment; education; graduates; personnel selection; recruitment; scientific research; industrial research; productivity; performance indicators; management; career development; salaries.

What Do Audiences Learn From Action-adventure Films?, 1995-1996
Barker, M., University of Sussex.
Date of Release: 25 August 2004
Abstract: This project asked 'What do audiences learn from action-adventure films?' with particular regard to the 1995 film 'Judge Dredd'. It sought to investigate the relationships between people's prior orientations to a particular film (their hopes, fears, prior knowledge, reasons and motivations for going), how they responded to it and what they took away from it (criteria of judgement, pleasures and/or disappointments, modes of attention, subsequent uses of the filmic experience). At the same time, the project provided the opportunity to investigate existing methodological approaches to audience research, and to develop new analytic protocols, resulting in the development and testing of a new model for understanding audiences responses to popular films.
Main Topics: Audiences; audience research; audience reaction; cinema; cinema attendance; culture; cultural users; films; mass-media; watching.

Use of Mosaic Arrays in Infrared Astronomy, 1985-1990
Edge, D., University of Edinburgh.
Date of Release: 25 August 2004
Abstract: Recent research in the sociology of technology had focused on the factors that determine crucial design choices: in the sociology of science, the role of instrumentation in shaping the development of science is being stressed. This project combined these two interests. Several teams of infrared astronomers are currently building cameras incorporating mosaic detectors arrays. These arrays, which combine the output of several hundred individual sensors, emerged from military research and development, and are now available on the open market. But, despite this identical technical output, the teams'cameras will differ significantly. The aim of this project was to investigate the reasons for these differences and their subsequent effects. The way in which the teams organise their work was the focus of analysis; plus the teams'differing locations (in observatories or universities), and the extent in which their designs were influenced not only by 'scientific goals'but also by their perceptions of other important 'reference groups'(eg. other users or committees considering the design of later facilities.
Of the 61 interviews only two are transcribed. Recordings form the main part of the collection.
Main Topics: Astronomy; practical astronomy; science and technology; engineering; design; applied research; research and development; scientists; scientific personnel; employment; universities; organisations.

Past Witness Seminar Programme, 1986-
Kandiah, M., University of London. Institute of Historical Research. Centre for Contemporary British History.
Date of Release: 25 May 2004
Abstract: Since its founding in 1986, the Institute of Contemporary British History (ICBH), now known as the Centre for Contemporary British History, has been uniquely associated with the production of 'witness seminars' on events or developments which have taken place within the bounds of living memory.
Based on the analysis of the experiences of interviewees, all of whom had first hand experience of dealing with charitable disputes, this work seeks to shed light upon the frequency of disputes occurring in the charitable sector, and the nature of third party involvement.
They often prove to be of more value than one-on-one interviews because of the interaction between witnesses stimulated during these discussions. They have been adopted by other institutions, both in Britain and abroad, and the CCBH has regularly collaborated with scholars from other institutions in planning and hosting witness seminars of particular relevance to their work.
