Secondary Analysis of Qualitative DataAn ESRC Advanced Training Network course
Date: 8-9 May 2012
Location: UK Data Archive, University of Essex, Colchester
This workshop is designed to offer training in the method and practice of secondary analysis of qualitative data.
The workshop will combine presentations and practical sessions addressing the key issues in secondary analysis: research ethics, methodological challenges, data context and sampling.
Participants will gain direct experience of accessing qualitative data from the Economic and Social Data Service and Timescapes collections during a bespoke IT workshop, and engage in other hands-on sessions focusing on:
- how to read and reflect on data collected by others
- the meaning and use of documentation and other contextual material
- sampling strategies for secondary analysis
The workshop is suitable for all researchers who are contemplating, or already using, secondary analysis in their research. A grounding in, and familiarity with, qualitative research methods, is a prerequisite.
This course is offered as part of the ESRC Advanced Training Network. These training courses offer social science postgraduates the opportunity to access high quality advanced training both within and outside of their home institution, whether in their own discipline, a particular research method, or in a different area of research in order to develop new skills and knowledge.
There is a fee for this workshop, which is non-refundable unless notice of cancellation is received within 5 working days of the event. The course fee is £60 for UK-registered students; £120 for staff from UK academic institutions/research centres), ESRC funded researchers and UK registered charitable organisations; and £440 for all other participants.
