Examples of archived data-challenging cases
One of the most frequent questions potential depositors ask is "how do I prepare my data for archiving?".
There are general
guidelines for data creators
and there is also extensive
information about ethics,
consent, copyright and so on. But in some instances, potential depositors are also grappling with
'hard-to-archive' data with complex challenges such as ambiguous terms of consent, exceptionally sensitive data,
uncertainty about 'how much' anonymisation to do, and more.
To assist in such situations, ESDS Qualidata have provided several cases studies
that describe how researchers have previously tackled the task of archiving their challenging data. Various problems were encountered,
and it is important to note,
successfully overcome, including:
- archiving not planned from the project's inception
- sensitive data
- maintaining the research team
during the archiving work
- long time lapses between doing the research and preparing the data for archiving
These researchers are to be congratulated for their efforts on making their data shareable.
