Restrictions on use

The re-use of data by other researchers or students, or for a new purpose, is restricted by the terms and conditions outlined in the End User Licence. All users have to agree to this licence when registering. Data can only be accessed by those registered to use the data and who have agreed to any special conditions.

In order to pass data to another user, or to re-use it for another purpose, refer to the information below. Note that data supplied under a Special Licence can only be accessed by those registered under that Licence for the purpose specified in the Licence, and cannot be used for teaching purposes.

I want to use data I already hold for a new purpose
Using Your account, register a new use of data, add the relevant datasets to your registered usage and fulfil online, any outstanding conditions where the datasets for that usage are listed. Users of the ESDS International macro databanks can use the data downloaded for any purpose that falls within the terms and conditions of that database without the requirement to register a use of the data.

A researcher using the data for the same purpose as me needs to access my copy of the data
The researcher must first register for an account. You should then use Your account to add the researcher to your registered usage (you will need to know the new researcher's email address). The new member of the registered usage will then need to log in to their account, select the registered usage and fulfil online, any outstanding conditions where the datasets for that usage are listed. For users of the ESDS International macro databanks there is no requirement to register a use of the data, but the new researcher must access the databanks online using their own username and password and agree to any terms and conditions.

A researcher wishes to access my copy of the data for a different purpose
The researcher must register for an account, register their use of data in their account, add the datasets to their registered usage and fulfil online, any outstanding conditions where the datasets for that usage are listed. For users of the ESDS International macro databanks there is no requirement to register a use of the data, but the new researcher must access the databanks online using their own username and password and agree to any terms and conditions.

I wish to share data with my students as part of a taught course
Using Your account, register a new use of data, tick the 'Teaching only' option, and place an order for the required data. All students who are registered with us should be added to your usage details. Any students not registered should sign the Access Agreement for Teaching form (the return address is specified on the form). Subsequent to your class, or at the same time as registering your teaching usage, you should also add the total number of students to the registered usage details. Access to data, for teaching, placed on any shared areas, including web sites, must be restricted to registered users or to users who have signed the Access Agreement for Teaching. This data must be removed from the shared area when the data are no longer required.

Students using data for their own research, e.g. for a PhD or an MPhil, are classified as researchers - see above.

For access to the ESDS International macro databanks there is no requirement to register a teaching usage, but each student must register and agree online to any terms and conditions. However, the IMF, World Bank, UN, ILO and Eurostat allow the data to be used in teaching packs under certain conditions. See ESDS International Special Conditions for more details.
