Managing and sharing research dataArticle dated: 3 January 2008 On 11 March 2008, as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science, the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) is holding two workshops on managing and sharing research data. Guidance is based on advice and support provided to ESRC award holders as part of their contractual obligations to share data, and to the cross Research Council Rural Economy and Land Use (RELU) Programme which requires formalised data management plans. These hands-on workshops will cover key issues on data management and sharing as applied to socio-economic research involving people as participants (interviews, questionnaires, focus groups, observation and so on).
The workshops focus on:
- dealing with confidential research information and personal data
- developing consent agreements for obtaining informed consent from participants
- appropriate anonymisation techniques to enable use and sharing of research data
The workshops will provide theoretical information and practical exercises.
Two parallel workshops will be held at the University of Essex and the University of Leeds on 11 March 2008 between 13.15 and 16.30. There is no cost for these workshops but places are limited so booking is essential. Priority will be given to researchers actively collecting data or to ethics committee members.
