in England (LSYPE)

LSYPE, also known as Next
Steps, commissioned by the former Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and now managed by the
Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), is a
major innovative panel study of young people which brings together data from a
number of different sources, including both annual interviews with young people
and their parents and administrative sources.
The main role of the study is to identify, and enable analysis and understanding
of, the key factors affecting young people's progress in transition from the
later years of compulsory education, through any subsequent education or
training, to entry into the labour market or other outcomes. Data from the
study will be used, among other things, to monitor the progress of the cohort
group, evaluate the success or otherwise of policy aimed at this group and
provide an evidence base for further policy development. Sample boosts took
place for deprivation factors and for ethnicity.

The survey was commissioned with BMRB Social Research as the lead contractor, in
consortium with GfK NOP and Ipsos MORI. The Joint Centre for Longitudinal
Research (JCLR) partners - the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS) and the
National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) - were commissioned by the DCSF to
develop the research design.
Users registered with the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) have access
to the LSYPE datasets via the instant download service.

Data from Wave 3 of the study were added to the two waves already made available via ESDS
in April 2008. For Wave 4 and going forward, the depositors aim to
deposit an initial dataset for each wave within 12 months
of the end of the fieldwork.
The data have been linked to administrative data held on the National Pupil
Database (NPD), a pupil-level database which matches pupil and school
characteristic data to pupil-level attainment. From October 2008, a selection of
variables extracted from this database, covering GCSEs gained and grades, and Key Stage
test scores for LSYPE respondents, have been made available, alongside a serial number
variable for linkage.

LSYPE teaching dataset

An LSYPE sampler dataset has been created which serves as an introduction to the main
data: .
The dataset is in rectangular format and contains 269 of the most commonly-used variables in
the main LSYPE Wave 1 data and can be used as a teaching aid and also as an introduction for new and
potential users of the main data. Variable names on the dataset are the same as those on the original LSYPE
dataset, held under .
