OECD Globalisation Statistics

Dataset description and subject overview

The Globalisation Statistics database contains figures on foreign affiliates (inward investment) by investing country in the manufacturing sector covering variables such as number of enterprises, total employees, gross output, imports/exports, gross fixed capital formation and Research and Development expenditures and also presents data on inward and outward investment for services.

The manufacturing data is presented in 6 Beyond 20/20 Web Data Server (WDS) tables. It covers the years 1983-99 and is broken down by industrial sector and by partner country. The data are classified according to ISIC Revision 2 or Revision 3 or both depending on the year.

  • Inward investment by industry according to ISIC Revision 2
  • Inward investment by investing country for the total manufacturing sector according to ISIC Revision 2)
  • Inward investment by industry according to ISIC Revision 3
  • Inward investment by investing country for the total manufacturing sector according to ISIC Revision 3)
  • Outward investment by industry according to ISIC Revision 3
  • Outward investment by country of location for the total manufacturing sector (according to ISIC Revision 3).

Within these tables, the following 18 manufacturing variables covered are:

  • Number of enterprises/establishments (units)
  • Number of employees (units or full-time equivalent)
  • Production (million national currency)
  • Turnover (million national currency)
  • Value added (million national currency)
  • Wages and salaries (million national currency)
  • R&D expenditure (million national currency)
  • Number of researchers (units or full-time equivalent)
  • Gross fixed capital formation (million national currency)
  • Total exports (million national currency)
  • Total imports (million national currency)
  • Intra-firm exports (million national currency)
  • Intra-firm imports (million national currency)
  • Gross operating surplus (million national currency)
  • Technological payments (million national currency)
  • Technological receipts (million national currency)
  • Stock of foreign direct investment (million national currency)
  • Capital under foreign influence (million national currency)

There are 4 beyond 20/20 WDS tables relating to Service sector (ISIC Revision 3 only):

The service sector data is presented in 4 Beyond 20/20 WDS tables. It covers the years 1990-2001 and the data are classified according to ISIC Revision 3 only.

  • Inward investment by industry
  • Inward investment by investing country for selected services sectors
  • Outward investment by industry
  • Outward investment by country of location for selected services sectors

There are 5 variables covered within these tables:

  • Number of employees (units or full-time equivalents)
  • Turnover: at current prices (million national currency, millions of euros for Luxembourg and Portugal)
  • Value added: at current prices (million national currency)
  • Total exports: at current prices (million national currency)
  • Total imports: at current prices (million national currency)

As part of the ESDS online registration process, you are required to accept the End User License conditions of use before being allowed access to the data. In addition, the following additional special conditions of use apply to the OECD databases (hereinafter called the "Work") obtained through the Economic and Social Data Service (hereinafter called the "ESDS"):

  1. The Work is the subject of copyright and the sole and exclusive ownership of the OECD (hereinafter called the "Publisher").
  2. Registered Users of the ESDS (hereinafter called "End Users") agree

In the manufacturing tables the following 18 countries are covered:

Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Turkey and the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Poland and the United States.

In the service tables the following 19 countries are covered:

Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Turkey.
