Libya Returns to the International
Fold
During March, in what was the first visit to Libya by a British Prime
Minister since 1943, Tony Blair held talks with Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.
The meeting took place in a traditional Bedouin tent in Tripoli following
Libya's renunciation of weapons of mass destruction in December 2003.

bombing. UN suspends sanctions.
August 2003: Libya formally accepts responsibility for Lockerbie
and agrees to pay compensation to the families.
September 2003: UN Security Council votes to lift sanctions
completely.
December 2003: Gaddafi renounces weapons of mass destruction
programmes.
March 2004: Tony Blair visits Colonel Gaddafi, the first
British prime minister to do so since 1943.
April 2004: British police officers travel to Libya to investigate
the murder of Yvonne Fletcher.
