Seventh Annual ESDS International Conference
On Monday 28th November 2011, ESDS International held their 7th successive annual conference at the Institute of Materials in London with a theme of Understanding the world: evidence and impact.
The focus of this year’s event was twofold – i) research using international data and ii) we heard Inter Governmental Organisation data providers speak about their key data resources for understanding the world.
In the data provider session, Gareth McGuinness from the International Monetary Fund spoke about 'Understanding the world economy using Principal Global Indicators and other international data', Toby Green from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development spoke about 'The story behind the OECD's Your Better Life Index', Alison Park from NatCen presented the 'Cross-national attitudinal research: The International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) and the European Social Survey (ESS)’ and Jean-Yves Garnier spoke about ‘2009: A year of major changes on the energy scene’.
In the poster presentation session researchers using international data introduced their work on topics such as 'Are Oil Revenue Funds effective in oil rich countries?', 'The curse of tourism?', 'Openness, Economic Growth, and Human Development: Evidence from South Asia' and 'Impact of Green Energy Policies on Electricity Market: An Econometric Analysis'.
The second researcher session included talks on the 'The Yield Curve as a Predictor of Economic Performance in Asia', 'The Effects of Economic Reforms on Manufacturing Dualism: Evidence from India', 'Electricity Co-operation and Decarbonisation: The Role of Import and Export in CO2 Reduction' and 'A Comparison of the EU-15 Countries Based on the Stiglitz Report’s Recommendations'.
The day culminated with awards given out to the two most popular researcher presented posters: 1st prize went to Julia Gutierrez, University of Leicester who presented her work on ‘Impact of Green Energy Policies on Electricity Market: An Econometric Analysis’ and 2nd prize to Dina Azhgaliyeva, University of Essex with her work ‘Are Oil Revenue Funds effective in oil rich countries?’.
