Visualise the MDGs
The MDG Monitor is designed as a one-stop-shop for information on progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), globally and at the country level. The MDG Monitor showcases existing UN data (see the complete MDG database at http://mdgs.un.org). The figures presented are from the official MDG Indicators database, maintained by the UN Statistics Division. Using the MDG Monitor you can track progress through interactive maps and country-specific profiles.
In this activity you will use the MDG Monitor interactive map to visualise across the globe an indicator used to measure the progress towards Goal 3, to 'Promote gender equality and empower women' - Indicator 3.3 'Proportion of seats held by women in national parliament.'
Step 1: Select Goal Indicator
Go to the MDG Monitor web site at www.mdgmonitor.org/ and select MDG Map from the tabs available across the top of the screen. You should now see a map showing the worlds boundaries.
You will now need to select an indicator to view on this map. On the left hand side of the screen under Select Goal Indicator you should scroll down to select 3. Women > Seats held by women in national parliament, percentage.

You will see an immediate change in the map - data from the most recent year is displayed for all countries.
The Legend for the data shows the percentage of seats held by women in national parliament color coded, for example those countries with greater than 25% of women in parliament are shown in red and those countries with less than 5% in dark blue. By hovering your mouse over each country you can see the actual data value for each country - so for example, in the screen shot we can see that Sweden had 47.3% of its parliament seats held by women in 2007. Note: Those countries without reported data are shown in grey.

Step 2: Select Location
You can now browse through all countries to select a particular location to view on the map using the Select a Location option. It is also possible to use the Zoom in/Zoom out functions available on the map to get a closer look at the area of interest.
Step 3: Select Year
The default display shows the most recent data available, but you can easily change this by using the Select Year scroll bar along the top of the map.

The data runs from 1990 and this is a very quick and easy way of seeing change throughout the years for each country and indicator. Click on each year from 1990 onwards and you can hover over a country to see how the data values have changed - for example, in 1990, Sweden had 38.4% of seats in parliament held by women.
Step 4: View additional information
The final task in this activity is to view supporting information about the map and the goal displayed. Simply click on the following tabs at the bottom of the map to find:
- About this Map: provides contact information for further information and website relating to indicator chosen. Definition, method of computation and comments about the indicator chosen and also further information the data availability and estimations given.
- Additional Resources: links through to the UN Statistics Division website.
- Topic News: provides news relating to the Goal you have chosen to display on the interactive map, i.e. in this case you will be taken directly to the MDG Monitor website news relating to Goal 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women.
