Guide to Latinobarómetro
 |
|
Latinobarómetro is an annual public opinion survey, conducted in 18 countries in Latin America, representing
more than 400 million people. The annual survey involves around 19,000 interviews with the same survey instrument
employed in all countries, allowing methodological and cross-national comparisons to be made on questions covering
the opinions, attitudes and behaviour of the continent's inhabitants across a wide range of economic and social issues.
|
|
Each year the survey focuses on a principal theme, for example, political parties, poverty, immigration or social
capital. At the same time, identical questions repeated at regular intervals also allow the interested researcher
to create a time series on many different topics.

|
The study, beginning in 1995 with coverage across eight countries in the region, is produced by Latinobarómetro Corporation, a non-profit
Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Santiago, Chile.
Accessing data and documentation
The UK Data Archive has acquired ESRC funding for a three year licence, running from September 2007, to provide access
to the Latinobarómetro. UK residents in higher or further education and registered with the Economic and
Social Data Service (ESDS) can access the data free of charge.

Analyse online
|
|
The Latinobarómetro allows users to browse and analyse the survey data online. Users can access question text, produce
frequencies and cross-tabulations by country, using socio-demographic and other variables, and produce graphs.
The Latinobarómetro interface is very user-friendly and allows for analysis to be conducted on the sample
or samples specified by the user. That is, users may focus on a single country at a single time point or they
may pool the responses from any combination of samples across the whole time range.

Download
Data files are available for different years in both Spanish - the official language - and English. Users may download the data
in any of three formats - SPSS, Stata, or SAS transport.
Documentation, in the form of technical reports, codebooks and questionnaires may also be downloaded by
ESDS-registered users.
Annual press releases, covering key findings, are available to download (without the requirement to register) at:
