Usage of the Scottish Social Attitudes Survey

  • Scottish identities – Dr Jenny Blain (Sheffield Hallam University – Dept of Psychology; Sociology and Politics). September 2011
    I am looking at Scottish identities and while my work is mostly qualitative I would like to develop some background using the national identities questions from the Scottish Social Attitudes survey. This may involve exploring changes between 2000 and the present.
  • Well-being and inflation – Professor David Bell (University of Stirling – Economics). September 2011
    This study is intended to examine the trade-off between unemployment and inflation measured in terms of their respective effects on well-being. It will mainly focus on the Euro barometer datasets to develop consistent estimates of the impact of unemployment and inflation on the well-being of the citizens of different European countries.

  • GILDED project – Dr Nick Gotts (James Hutton Institute; The – Integrated Land Use Systems). June 2011
    The data will be used to construct input files for a simulation model of domestic energy demand at household and community level, in the context of the EU FP7 project GILDED (http://www.gildedeu.org/).

  • Poverty and Deprivation in Glasgow – Mr David Hazle. June 2011
    To obtain a greater understanding of households withing Glasgow, both in absolute terms and relative to the rest of Scotland. In particular, to analyse the most deprived household types and the households within the 15% most deprived datazones within Scotland. This will feed in to a wider research project on poverty and deprivation within local neighbourhoods in Glasgow. Additionally, to examine change, if any, over the period covered by the SHS.
  • Mass perceptions of national identity – Dr Daniel Soule (Glasgow Caledonian University – Caledonian Graduate School). March 2010
    the data will be used as part of the data set for a chapter in a forthcoming monograph on national identity and nationalism in Scotland.
  • Political mobilisation and media coverage during the Iray war – Dr Guy Elcheroth. January 2010
    I intend to use data on media coverage of the Iraq war in order to analyse the informational background within which political leaders in the UK rhetorically mobilised public support for or resistance against the military campaign in Iraq. This should notably help to clarify the way mass media coverage of events mediated the way political discourse impacted on public opinion.
  • Walking; Cycling and Socio economic status in Scotland – Dr Paulus Teguh Aditjandra (University of Aberdeen – Geography and Environment). October 2009
    I and my colleague at Centre for Transport Research (CTR) University of Aberdeen and Centre for Transport and Society(CTS) University of West England may use this data to identify and to analyse walking; cycling and socio-economic status in Scotland. This project is a response to NHS Scotland call on looking at walking and cycling (travel) activity pattern towards healthier and greener Scotland.

  • Exploring walking and cycling behaviour in Scotland – Dr Yusak Susilo (University of the West of England – Architecture and Planning). October 2009
    Has been commisioned by NHS Scotland to map datasets that related with walking and cycling behaviour in Scotland overtime. I am planning to use some multivariate stastistical analysis to explore the relationships between individual socio-demographic; built environment factor and cycling and walking behaviour in Scotland.

  • Research paper – Dr Stratos Patrikios (University of Glasgow – Government). June 2009
    I need to analyse this dataset in order to compare percentages across time. My paper focuses on the 2007 BSA and I need to compare attitudes towards faith schools with functionally equivalent questions.

    Research to reflect on how Scottish churches have engaged with public iissues and Parliaments/Governments since devolution, and to develop with the churches theological perspectives on public issues.

    To access data which might be used in a forthcoming conference paper on the provision and accessibility of government consultation information in the UK.
  • Savings Behaviour in Scotland – Mr Stewart Ritchie (The Actuarial Profession – Retired). April 2009
    I am researching the savings behaviour of people in Scotland over time, within identifiable subgroups (e.g. by age or socio-economic grouping), within geographical areas (e.g. Edinburgh cf Glasgow) and compared to other UK regions/UK/other countries.

    In a recent study in ongoing TOP-MARD research I have collected data on Trust across Scotland. I want to compare my findings with the Scottish survey findings.
  • Public attitudes to political institutions – Mr Ben Seyd (Kent,University of – Politics). May 2008
    Data to be used to investigate public attitudes to political institutions, in particular on topics such as trust, efficacy, satisfaction, perceptions of corruption.

    I will use the dataset for my quantitative research analysis project. I would like to examine discrimination in Scotland.

  • National identity and everyday political understanding – Professor Susan Condor (Lancaster University – Psychology). January 2007
    I intend to use this data as part of an ongoing programme of research on national identity and everyday understandings of political events, structures and processes in England. In particular, I wish to use the BSAS data to provide background information against which to interpret my own qualitative interview studies, which are designed to achieve a depth understanding of the ways in which national identity and political events are understood in relatively small samples.

  • Devolution and political culture, Canada and UK – Dr Ailsa Henderson (University of Edinburgh – Political Science). August 2006
    This research project examines the impact of federalism (or devolution) on the heterogeneity of political attitudes within a State. The case studies are primarily Canada and the UK although supplementary information will be used from Spain, Belgium, Germany and Australia.

    This usage is to allow me to describe Scottish datasets to audiences of other academics and postgraduates. The purpose is to broaden the use of these datasets within Scotland. I do not intend to share the data with any of those attending the lectures.

  • Devolution and Constitutional Change: national identity and constitutional change in England – Ms Jane Roberts (Oxford: Nuffield College – Social Studies). February 2005
    The project looks at the implications of devolution for national identities and support for the political system in the UK, my project focussing particularly on England but coordinated with linked projects in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
