Which years of the SCS are available?


Datasets are currently available for each survey from 1993 onwards. For a list of up-to-date datasets please refer to the Scottish Crime Survey page.


In 1982 and 1988 the Crime Survey in Scotland formed part of the British Crime Survey (BCS). The Scottish data from the 1982 and 1988 BCS are held separately at the UK Data Archive under SNs 4368 and 4599, as they have different access conditions to the main British Crime Survey. The Scottish part of the 1988 BCS was also known as the Scottish Areas Crime Survey.

What format is the data available in?


The data are available in SPSS, STATA and ASCII format. The 1993 and 1996 data are contained in one downloadable file.

Where can I obtain statistics and tables from the SCS?

The Scottish Crime Suvrey reports are downloadable from the Scottish Executive web site.

Does the SCS include information at the person level?


Yes the SCS includes information at the household, individual and ‘victim’ level.

What is the most detailed geography I can analyse the data at?


Data are available at the level of Standard Scottish Region. There are also highland/lowland and urban/rural indicators.
