Analysing Change Over Time: A guide to ESDS resources

This introductory guide gives an overview of ESDS data resources for the analysis of change over time. Its content in part represents the outcome of a one-day seminar held in October, 2006 at the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research (CCSR). The aim of the guide is to introduce the reader to some of the methodological, technical and data management issues surrounding the analysis of change.


Working with survey files: using hierarchical data, matching files and pooling data

It explains procedures in SPSS and Stata that can be used to work with datasets with different levels of hierarchy within single files, as well as how to combine files where different levels of hierarchy are stored across multiple files (i.e. a ‘database’ of data ‘tables’). Other related procedures considered include how to combine files to increase sample sizes.
