National Travel Survey Frequently Asked Questions
Questions:
Which years of
the NTS are available?
The first NTS was commissioned by the Ministry of Transport in 1965/66. Further
periodic surveys were carried out in 1972/73, 1975/76, 1978/79 and 1985/86 (ESDS
disseminates data from 1972 onwards). Since July 1988 the NTS has been carried
out as a continuous survey. Data from the most recent years have been amalgamated
into three-year periods and are available on a rolling year basis.
What format is
the data available in?
Most years of the NTS are available in SPSS, STATA, SAS, and ASCII tab-delimited
formats.
Where can I
obtain statistics and tables from the NTS?
The NTS results are amalgamated into three-year periods and are available on
a rolling year basis. The official report Focus on Personal Travel is published
every third year and is available from a good academic library or from The
Stationery Office. NTS publications are also freely available in Adobe Acrobat
PDF format from the Department
for Transport (DFT) website.
Does the NTS
include information at the person level?
Yes. Information is held at both the household and individual level.
What is the most
detailed geography I can analyse the data at?
The data is available at the level of Government Office Region.
Before I order,
how do I find out what questions/variables are included?
Variable lists and PDF user guides (including questionnaires) are freely available
via the Doc column in the Dataset Titles.
Are the same
questions asked each year?
Many of the questions remain the same from year to year. However, changes to
questions/new questions are introduced at the start of each three-year period.
Is there a more
general FAQ?
There is a generic FAQ for all surveys available.
