Northern Ireland Continuous Household Survey Frequently Asked Questions

Questions:

Which years of the CHS are available?

The survey started in 1983 and has been carried out continuously since then. ESDS has data avaiable from 1985 onwards. For an up-to-date list of available datasets, please refer to the Dataset Titles page.

What format is the data available in?

Most years of the CHS are available in SPSS, STATA and ASCII tab-delimited formats.

Where can I obtain statistics and tables from the CHS?

A series of monitors are freely available from the Central Survey Unit of NISRA. Publications are also downloadable in Adobe Acrobat PDF format from the Central Survey Unit web site.

Does the CHS include information at the person level?

Yes. Information is held at both the household and individual level.

What is the most detailed geography I can analyse the data at?

District Council Areas for Northern Ireland: Belfast, East, West.

Before I order, how do I find out what questions/variables are included?

Variable lists and PDF user guides (including questionnaires) are freely available via the Doc column in the Dataset Titles page.

Are the same questions asked each year?

The questionnaire consists of core items that are included each year, modules that recur on a regular cycle and ad hoc modules. Core items include accommodation, tenure, type of heating and fuel usage, employment status, employment activity, educational qualifications, adult and child health and family information. Non-core items include prevalence of smoking, level of alcohol consumption and sports and leisure activities. The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency web pages contain information on which topics have been covered each year.

Is there a more general FAQ?

There is a generic ESDS Government FAQ for all surveys available.
