Which years of
the CHS are available?
The survey started in 1983 and has been carried out continuously since then.
ESDS has data avaiable from 1985 onwards. For an up-to-date list of available datasets,

What format is
the data available in?
Most years of the CHS are available in SPSS, STATA and ASCII tab-delimited formats.
Where can I
obtain statistics and tables from the CHS?
A series of monitors
are freely available from the Central Survey Unit of NISRA. Publications are
also downloadable in Adobe Acrobat PDF format from the Central
Survey Unit web site.
Does the CHS
include information at the person level?
Yes. Information is held at both the household and individual level.
What is the most
detailed geography I can analyse the data at?
District Council Areas for Northern Ireland: Belfast, East, West.

Are the same
questions asked each year?
The questionnaire consists of core items that are included each year, modules
that recur on a regular cycle and ad hoc modules. Core items include accommodation,
tenure, type of heating and fuel usage, employment status, employment activity,
educational qualifications, adult and child health and family information. Non-core
items include prevalence of smoking, level of alcohol consumption and sports
and leisure activities. The Northern
Ireland Statistics and Research Agency web pages contain information on
which topics have been covered each year.
