National Food Survey Frequently Asked Questions
Questions:
Which years of
the NFS are available?
The NFS has been conducted on an annual basis since 1940. Data is available
from 1974 onwards. ONS deposit the
data on expenditure. Extra data and documentation for the food component of
the study (including low-level food variables and food consumption/weight data)
are deposited by DEFRA. These are added to the study when received. For an up-to-date
list of available datasets, please refer to the Dataset
Titles page.
What format is
the data available in?
Most years of the NFS are available in SPSS, STATA and ASCII tab-delimited formats.
Where can I
obtain statistics and tables from the NFS?
These are published in the official NFS reports which are available from a good
academic library or from The Stationery
Office. The latest NFS report (and some previous reports) are freely downloadable
in Adobe Acrobat PDF format from the DEFRA
web site.
Before I order,
how do I find out what questions/variables are included?
Variable lists and PDF user guides (including questionnaires) are freely available
via the Doc column in the Dataset Titles
page.
Does the NFS
include information at the person level?
Yes. Information is held at the household level and individual level.
Is there a more
general FAQ?
There is a generic
ESDS Government FAQ for all surveys available.
