Usage of the Life Opportunities Survey

  • Housing Choice Among the Elderly – Professor David Bell (University of Stirling – Economics). March 2012
    This research will consider the determinants of housing choice among the elderly, particularly the disabled elderly. The analysis involves household structure; household income, housing tenure, level of disability, financial and other assets.

  • Happiness; health and unemployment – Professor David Blanchflower (University of Stirling – Economics). December 2011
    examine how the welfare of the UK population is dealing with the onset of the great recession. This is a broad based project involving looking at depression, happiness as well as underemployment with emphasis on the young.

  • Families headed by parents with learning difficulties – Ms Gabrielle Hindmarsh. November 2011
    This research project aims to examine the family well-being, household environment and outcomes of children of families headed by parents with learning difficulties within population databases. The study will identify families headed by parents with learning difficulties and systematically examine the lives and families, identify child outcomes and the factors influencing these outcomes. In addition, the examination of child outcomes in comparison to each population as a whole will be made.

  • Material deprivation – Professor Stephen McKay (University of Birmingham – Social Policy). November 2011
    Poverty is sometimes measured using material deprivation indicators - either in addition to income; or instead of income. These have a history dating back to (at least) the 1968-69 Townsend study, with occasional one-off surveys to update. An investigation into their changing scope over time and link to income.

  • Disability demographics – Ms Cate Fisher. September 2011
    We plan to use this data to get a better idea of the profile of the disabled population in the UK. This will include a look at the age; gender; ethnicity; income and employment profile of this population; amongst other variables.

  • Learning Disabilities Public Health Observatory – Professor Eric Emerson (Lancaster University – Institute for Health Research). May 2011
    The Department of Health has commissioned a Learning Disabilities Public Health Observatory for England. The aim of the observatory is to provide information that will help improve the commissioning of health and social care services for children and adults with learning disabilities. One of our tasks is to determine what information can be extracted from major surveys that may be of value in supporting the work of the PHO.

  • Supporting data for DWP LPO quantitaitve survey – Mr Nick Coleman. April 2011
    I am currently contracted to manage and report on the quantitative survey of Lone Parent Obligations. Analysis of wave 1 data is taking place between September and December. In order to place the findings in context, analysis of other survey findings is being udnertaken.

  • Disability research project – Miss Laura Banks (University of Brighton – School of Applied Social Science). April 2011
    I am advising a local disability group in their research into barriers and opportunities faced by local people in Brighton and Hove. It would be useful to have access to national data on this subject in order to put findings into a wider context.
  • Evaluation of disability estimates from relational models – Dr Alan Marshall (University of Leeds – Geography). April 2011
    I will use this data as part of a paper that compares estimates of disabilty for districts in the Scottish household survey to my own model estimates that combine census and survey data.
