Which years of the IIS are available?

There are seven datasets in the Individual Income Series (IIS). The data are available for the years 1996/97, 1997/98, 1998/99 and 2004/05, 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2007/08.

Why use the IIS, given that its data are derived from the Family Resources Survey (FRS)?

The Individual Income series provide estimates of the individual income of women and men in Great Britain and changes in income over time. These provide a means of comparing the income accruing to women with that accruing to men, either directly or in their own right. Individual income estimates cover all adult women and men, whether living as couples or as single persons. This information complements data in other official statistics publications, which address different issues: HM Revenue and Customs’ statistics cover only taxable income; certain other statistics cover only earned income; and other series such as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Households Below Average Income (HBAI) analyse household income.

Where can I obtain statistics and tables from the IIS?

You can view the Individual Income Report and Report of the National Equality Panel via the documentation at the bottom of the IIS web page.

The Department for Work and Pensions website contains annual publications which summarise the results of the FRS and may contain information derived from the IIS. The FRS Annual Technical Reports are freely downloadable in Adobe Acrobat PDF format from the National Statistics website.

Does the IIS include information at the person level?

Yes, the IIS contains information at the individual level.

What is the most detailed geography I can analyse the data at?

The IIS dataset contains the following regional level variables: Government Office Region (GOR)

Before I order, how do I find out what questions/variables are included?

The data are derived directly from the Family Resources Survey (FRS) (available from ESDS under GN 33283) and the Households Below Average Income (HBAI) (available from ESDS under SN 5828). Variable documentation can be found on the web pages of those surveys.

What format are the data available in?

The IIS is available in SPSS, STATA, and ASCII tab-delimited formats.

What population is covered in the IIS?

Respondents of the FRS, 1996/97-1998/99 and 2004/05-2007/08. See the FRS for more details: list of FRS data.

Is there a more general FAQ?

There is a generic ESDS Government FAQ for all surveys available.
