Integrated Household Survey

Fieldwork for the Integrated Household Survey began in 2009 and the data is available from ESDS. The IHS is comprised of two sections: a suite of Core IHS questions with Individual Survey modules ‘bolted’ onto the core. Current modules of the IHS are:

  • Labour Force Survey (LFS) and associated boosts (APS)
  • General Lifestyle Survey (GLF) (formerly the General Household Survey)
  • Living Costs and Food Survey (LCF) (formerly the Expenditure and Food Survey)
  • English Housing Survey (EHS)
  • Life Opportunities Survey (LOS)

The Omnibus survey (now called the Opinions survey) was initially included in the IHS but was dropped in January 2010.

Data from the core is deposited as the IHS dataset. The modules are deposited as usual under their survey name, e.g. GLF, LFS.

You can find the latest updates for the IHS on the main ONS IHS page. The questionnaire is available in PDF format.

Experimental data

In its first year of publication all IHS statistics are designated as experimental. Experimental statistics are new official statistics undergoing evaluation. They are published in order to involve customers and stakeholders in their development and as a means to build in quality at an early stage. As the data are experimental ONS recommends that any publication of the IHS data should state the experimental branding. Where possible the source of the National Statistic for the estimate being published should also be referenced.
