sicr

Notes from the GHS

Question

In the 1988 GHS and in the "Employment, unemployment and government schemes "empstat" data module the industry variable "sicr" ranges from 500-811. This is inconsistent with the data documentation (page 63 in the "a2724ucb" pdf file) where it is suggested that the "sicr" variable should have 10 categories (ranging from 0 to 9). The same is true in the 1997 GHS wave ("Individual records for adults in hhold"="indivdl") data module, where the "sicr" variable starts with 0-9 (standard industry classification) but it also ranges from 500-811. Before and after these two years the "sicr" variable is consistent and ranges from 0 to 9. The data documentation does say that the industry division is derived from 3 digit Census codes, but I cannot see a way of translating the 500-811 categories back to a 0-9 classification. Would you please advise me how I can translate the 500-811 classification into a more convenient 0-9 one?

Answer

The codes that seem to be in the data are in fact those which were recorded by the interviewers. The 500-811 range was used in the 1991 census so can be found in some contemporary census o/p metadata. These codes and their associated divisions (which SHOULD be in the data) are listed in the data directory for the longitudinal study. I'm pasting from their metadata into a separate email from my own account (as there's too much text to be sent from the helpdesk system).
