Notes from the GHS

Question

I have a problem with SIC80 codes in GHS rounds before 1993 (variables sicr, sicr1, sicr2 and the like). Now I do have a table of SIC80 codes that run (not successively) from 010 to 990, but variables like sicr (sicr1, sicr2, etc.) in GHS (see, e.g. the round for 1989/90) contain values from 500 to 780. It looks like SIC80 coding was just squeezed into a successive coding in GHS. So I was wondering if you could help me with getting a conversion table for those codes. Also, it seems like for the rounds before 1980 when SIC68 was used, the information on detailed industry break-down was left out of GHS, i.e. the only variables that describe industry (like "indust" in round for 1979) contain a coding of general branches (construction, distribution, etc.) but not the original SIC68 coding. So, I was wondering if the files with original SIC68 coding are in principle available.

Answer

ONS have sent me a hard copy of the SIC80 codes that they use which look different to the LFS SIC80 codes you are using. I think they use this SIC80 frame to convert to 500 etc codes as this frame only goes up to 321 (whereas yours went up to 999). I will copy this and put in the post for you. Unfortunately the GHS team have no further documentation on this and they no longer have access to data files from before 1993 so it is not possible to look at the original data. Unfortunately it seems that the GHS team cannot provide SIC68 on the pre-1980 datasets.
