sampling

Notes from the GHS

Question

I wish to describe the sampling information of the GHS. I still need some more details on whether the sample is clustered within postcode sectors, or is the only clustering within households? I had tried many sources but the official information is all a bit vague. Could you help please?

Answer

The sampling for the GHS is described in the published reports. See: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_compendia/03_Appendix_B.pdf for 2003/4. It states that 576 strata are defined by socio-economic characteristics, and that since 1984 1 postcode sector (postcode sectors being the PSU) is selected from each stratum. Within each postcode sector 23 addresses are randomly selected. So this seems to indicate that we've got both stratification and geographical clustering going on. See Appendix B : http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_compendia/04_Appendix_C.pdf to see what this means in terms of defts.
