Notes from the GHS

Question

I would like to create a consistent time series for the socioeconomic status of the individual (occupational classification (seg)) using the GHS. For some years there is a 2 digit coding and for some other years there is a 3 digit coding. For instance, for 1985 to 1990 the socioeconomic status ranges from 1-351 and for 1991 to 1993 ranges from 100-990. What I would like to have is a socioeconomic classification running from 1-19 (as in 1983 and 1984, or after 1991). I attach the 19 category socioeconomic classification. Would you please drop me a line of how could I translate the 3 digit classification into a 2 digit classification, or provide me with the labels of each category for the years that there is a 3 digit classification (1985 to 1993)? I have searched the GHS Guide. There is no information of how one can re-code back from 3 to 2 digits. The only information given is that the classification moved to the 3 digit level in order to be compatible with the Census and the LFS. The corresponding variables that capture the socioeconomic status of the individual are: occupi for years 1983 to 1993, mainseg from 1994 to 1997, seg for 1998 and 2000, and newseg from 2001 to 2003.

Answer

You may want to look at the ESDS Government derived variable pages.
