grosspay

Notes from the GHS

Question

Please could you explain to me why the sample means are so high for the grosspay variable (usual gross weekly earnings). It has a sample mean of 24744. Surely there must be an error somewhere in the coding for this to be the case. I can't find any information in the documentation about earnings measures. If you open the individual level data, then tabulate over positive values and leave out the missing.

Answer

The documentation suggests that "grosspay" is measured in pence. I agree it is not clearly stated but the derived variable specification shows that grosspay is derived from grosssam which is in pounds, multiplied by 100. So, your sample mean of 24744, should be read £247.44.
