edlev

Notes from the GHS

Question

I am using the General Household Survey and I wonder if you can tell me if you have any documentation relating the Educational Variable EDLEV classification to the International Classification of Educational Levels: ISCED?

Answer

EDLEV is a derived variable in the General Household Survey which was replaced in 2000 with edlev00. The most recent description of the variable is available on the ESDS web site (under General Household Survey, documentation) for the 98-99 GHS then search for EDLEV - but be warned its a fairly involved algorithm, and you'll need to double check the contributory variables against the original questionnaire and other derivations. All of this should be available in the online documentation, which can be found by going to www.esds.ac.uk then selecting major studies from the sidebar, then general household survey, then clicking on the little notebook icon next to the appropriate dataset. The GHS datasets listing can also be found on the ESDS web site. I've looked in a few sets of documentation for an isced variable but have not been able to find one. I'll happily search again, but to narrow down my search it would help to know which years' data you are using (ISCED came into being more than 20 years ago!). It is, however, possible that the variable is not on the UKDA version of the data. In the meantime, you may be interested in a UNESCO document about ISCED I found using a straightforward web search.
