Family Resources Survey Frequently Asked Questions

Questions:

Which years of the FRS are available?

The FRS has been conducted on an annual basis since 1992. Data is available from 1993-4 onwards. For an up-to-date list of available datasets, please refer to the Dataset Titles page.

What format is the data available in?

Most years of the FRS are available in SPSS, STATA and ASCII tab-delimited formats.

Where can I obtain statistics and tables from the FRS?

These are published in the official FRS reports and are available from a good academic library or from The Stationery Office. The Department for Work and Pensions web site contains annual publications which summarise the results of the full survey year. The FRS Annual Technical Reports are freely downloadable in Adobe Acrobat PDF format from the National Statistics web site.

What is the most detailed geography I can analyse the data at?

The FRS includes Standard Region and Government Office Region.

Before I order, how do I find out what questions/variables are included?

Variable lists and PDF user guides (including questionnaires) are freely available via the Doc column in the Dataset Titles page.

Does the FRS include information at the person level?

Yes. Information is held at the household level, individual level and the ‘benefit unit’ level.

Is there a more general FAQ?

There is a generic ESDS Government FAQ for all surveys available.
