Family Resources Survey
The Family Resources Survey (FRS) is
a continuous survey with an annual target sample size of 24,000 private households
(25,000 prior to April 1997). Fieldwork is carried out jointly by the Office
for National Statistics and the National Centre for Social Research.
The survey was launched in October 1992 to meet the information
requirements of Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) analysts. The survey
aims to: support the monitoring of the social security programme; support the
costing and modelling of changes to national insurance contributions and social
security benefits; provide better information for the forecasting of benefit
expenditure. Households interviewed in the survey are asked a wide range of
questions about their circumstances including receipt of Social Security benefits,
housing costs, assets and savings. Although some of the information collected
is available elsewhere, the FRS provides new or much more detailed information
in a number of areas and brings some topics together on one survey for the first
time.
The National Statistics FRS web site contains some detailed information about the survey and links to the reports.
Changes to the collection of EU-SILC data
The EU-SILC data will soon be be collected from the FRS instead of the GLF. A document outlining the changes is available in PDF format.
