ESDS Government

Occupational coding in the LFS

ESDS Government has created some STATA syntax to derive a number of NS-SEC variables for the 1991 to 2001 LFS datasets.

Please read the following document before looking at the accompanying files because it provides a summary of the work and a description of each file: Summary of NS-SEC.

Accompanying files:

  • nssecdetails.doc: this document provides a description of NS-SEC and how it is derived. It is drawn from the ONS web site
  • LFS_NSSECsyntax.pdf: this file contains the syntax to derive each variable in STATA
  • nssec90.dta: this STATA data file contains SOC90 and provides the matrix to link SOC90 with the dataset for period 1991-2001. It is used in conjunction with the STATA syntax file. This creates NSSEC using reduced method (the size of workforce is not taken into account for employment status). It is a look-up table used in LFS-NSSECsyntax.doc
  • fmwrksz90oc.dta: this STATA data file contains SOC90 and provides the matrix to link SOC90 with the dataset for period 1991-2001. It is used in conjunction with the STATA syntax file. This creates NSSEC using full method (the size of workforce is taken into account for employment status). It is a look-up table used in LFS-NSSECsyntax.doc
  • empstatusflowchart.pdf: two flowcharts used to derive employment status for 1991 - 2001 LFS. Flowchart 1 is used for reduced method and flowchart 2 is used for full method.
