The following word document gives some general information on changes to occupational coding over time (not GHS-specific).

NS-SEC

ESDS Government has created some STATA syntax to derive a number of NS-SEC variables for the 1991/92 to 2000/01 GHS datasets.

Please read the following Word document before looking at the accompanying files because it provides a summary of the work and a description of each the accompanying files.

Accompanying files:

  • NSSECdetails.doc: this document provides a description of NS-SEC and how it is derived. It is drawn from the ONS web site
  • NSSECinGHS.xls: this file summarises the variables that can be derived for each GHS year
  • GHS_NSSECsyntax.doc: this file contains the syntax to derive each variable in STATA
  • NSSEC90.dta: this is a STATA file that contains SOC90 and provides the matrix to link SOC90 with the dataset for each year. It is used in conjunction with the STATA syntax file
  • Employmentstatus.doc: a flowchart used to derive employment status for 1991 - 1996.
