ESDS provides comprehensive information for each of the 5,000 plus datasets in its Data Catalogue. Searching and browsing this information is free and does not require registration. Access to the data requires registration.

Finding data

At www.esds.ac.uk, try these searches through the top Data tab and the Finding left-hand link:
free text search
  Search term:

Income
For other searches (e.g. Keyword, Geography, UKDA Study Number), use the Advanced Search. Note: all searches can be done on all of the Data Catalogue or per specialist data service
Find new datasets and new editions of data released in the last month

subject category

Each dataset is assigned one or more categories to reflect the overall subject of the data at study level.

Search for data where the overall subject of the data at study level is Leisure, tourism and sport.

HINT - look under Society and culture or use the browser bar to find Leisure on page

Each catalogue record contains a list of Keywords covering all topics included in the data.

Use the UKDA HASSET thesaurus to decide on the appropriate search terms for data that cover topics relating to Household chores.

HINT - find an alternative search term. Try the matching term Households

search HASSET
Major studies
Major studies

Choose Major studies from the left hand menu to explore the most popular series. Dedicated web pages provide quick and easy access to the data and documentation. The majority of the series also have their own introduction, news and links pages.

Exploring catalogue records

Using the Advanced Search option, search for Social Capital, Participation and the Causal Role of Socialisation, 2000-2001, study number 4982, by Title or UKDA Study Number.

Click on the Study Description/Documentation link or SN 4982 to display the catalogue record and links to documentation, variables (if available), keywords, publications, and related studies.

search study number 4982

The catalogue record can be consulted to find out: who sponsored the study; who deposited the data; coverage (dates, country, regions etc.); sampling and data collection methodology.
Sections within the catalogue record include:
  • Abstract - provides a brief overview of the study and the main topics covered
  • Keywords - subject keywords, taken from the HASSET thesaurus, reflecting the coverage of the dataset;selecting a term retrieves other datasets given the same term

  • Publications - a bibliography of publications produced by the principal investigators
  • Related studies - related datasets held in the Data Catalogue

Documentation

documentation for SN 4982

Documentation usually consists of a User Guide containing background details of the study and research methods, including original instruments - e.g. questionnaires, and coding information.

Select the file 4982userguide.pdf. Explore the user guide using the bookmarks. The UKDA_Study_4982_Information.htm file contains the bibliographic citation for the dataset and an abbreviated catalogue record.

The Read file for SN 4982 Read file below the documentation table, describes how the data were processed and gives other information not available in the user guides.

Consulting data listings for qualitative data collections

Each qualitative dataset has a 'Data list'. This provides important details of the sample such as basic interviewee biographical details and an indication of length and file names of transcripts. It can help users to identify those transcripts most relevant to their research.

documentation for SN 4594

From a catalogue search on UKDA Study Number locate study 4594, Policing, Cultural Change and 'Structures of Feeling' in Post-War England, 1945-1999. In the documentation table select the Data list file: q4594ulist.pdf

Exploring variable lists

A study with SPSS data typically has a browsable list of its variable and value labels. Perform UKDA Study Number search on 4683 to locate the Millennium Cohort Study First Survey 2001-2003. View the catalogue record and click on Variable List at the top of the record.

Highlight variable 15 and choose Show Variable below the box.
