Abstract:
This study is concerned with the time spent by households in caring for dependent adults and for children. It covers the time allocated to caring, the particular times during the day when care is required, and their relationship to other support services available in the community.

The study examines: the extent to which the caring function of the family constrains women's participation in the community; problems created by the mismatch between times when support services are available and the needs of the household.
