Abstract:
Latinobarómetro is an annual public opinion survey of approximately 19,000 interviews, conducted in 18 countries in Latin America, representing more than 400 million inhabitants. The overall study is produced by the Latinobarómetro Corporation, a non-profit non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Santiago, Chile, which is responsible for data production and publication. The individual interviews are conducted by a number of survey organisations, based in each country.

The study surveys the development of democracies, economies and societies, applying attitudinal, opinion, and behavioural indicators. The data are used by social and political actors, international organisations, governments and mass media. Users should note that country coverage varies over time; for example the 1995 survey covered only 8 countries, rising to 17 in 1996, and with the addition of the Dominican Republic in 2004, 18 countries.

The Latinobarómetro data are not held at the UK Data Archive, but online access is available to registered ESDS users, including the facility to download files in various software formats or analyse data online. Documentation available on the Latinobarómetro web site includes questionnaires (in both English and Spanish) and technical information for the individual surveys. For the third edition (October 2009), the 2008 data have been added to the study.

Whilst individual topic coverage varies over time, the surveys broadly cover social and political attitudes on a range of topics, including political and economic structure of the country, democracy, insitutions, public and individual political concerns, economic and political expectations, international relations, values and society, and the mass media. Socio-demographic characteristics of individual respondents are also gathered.
