The Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) were funded to compile this teaching dataset by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC).

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the Northern Ireland Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment funded the main Labour Force Survey, from which this dataset has been compiled.

Abstract:
The Labour Force Survey (LFS), 2002 Teaching Dataset has been prepared by ESDS Government solely for the purpose of teaching and student use. The dataset will help class tutors to incorporate empirical data into their courses and thus to develop students’ skills in quantitative methods of analysis.

Many of the names of the variables and value labels are those used in the original LFS files. However, some variables have been recoded for ease of use and may vary from the original LFS data.

For the second edition, individual non-respondents were omitted from the dataset, resulting in approximately 2300 less cases. The documentation has also been updated.

Users may be interested in the STATA for the LFS guide available from Online statistical guides and which explores this dataset.

Main Topics:
The dataset contains data from all four quarters of the 2002/3 LFS (UKDA Study Numbers: 4547, 4600, 4664, 4626) for respondents aged 16-65 and resident in the UK (n=63,559). This is only a subset of the original data files which include data on all those aged 16 and over. For each quarter of 2002/3 only the respondents who were in their final interview were included in the teaching dataset. This is because information about pay (which is a popular topic of analysis) is only collected in the final interview.

The dataset includes 58 variables. Most of the variables included within the dataset are individual variables, and require individual based analysis. However, there are two household variables: ‘ten96’ and ‘house’.

Topics covered include socio-demographic characteristics, health, economic, activity, pay, employment status and working hours.
