General Lifestyle Survey: Special Licence Access list of datasets (previously known as General Household Survey)
Background to the GLS The General Household Survey (GHS) is available both as standard End User Licence (see GHS datasets page) and as Special Licence access versions for waves prior to 2007. From the 2007 wave onwards, it has been available only to Approved Researchers, under Special Licence access conditions, due to a change in methodology to encompass a longitudinal survey design. From January 2008, the GHS became known as the General Lifestyle Survey (GLS), a module of the Integrated Household Survey (IHS). Further information about the change to GLS may be found in the GLS 2008 documentation, held with SN 6414 in the table below.
Users should obtain the data and documentation using the table below. |

Accessing these data
The coming into force of the Statistics and Registration Service Act in April 2008 brought an end to the Special Licence arrangements that had been in operation since September 2005. Access to these data continues but under a new legal framework set out in the Act. From April 2008, any registered user requiring Special Licence data has to be accredited by the UK Statistics Authority as an Approved Researcher. UK users can order the data from ESDS in the usual way and will be directed to new Approved Researcher forms for completion. The older Special Licence forms can no longer be accepted.
