The survey explored the kinds of difficulties experienced by Polish and Lithuanian workers in the UK labour market, and their potential for joining trades unions. More specifically, it addressed:

who is a member of or wants to join a trades union and why?

what are the obstacles to joining a trades union?

where are prospective union members working?

what are the kinds of difficulties that Polish and Lithuanian workers in the UK face in their employment relations and conditions?

Further information about the project may be found in the documentation, and more generally, on the Compas Labour Markets web page.

Coverage:

Time Period Covered: May 2004 - February 2006
Dates of Fieldwork: August 2005 - February 2006
Country: United Kingdom
Spatial Units: Workplace regions in the UK
Observation Units: Individuals
Kind of Data: Numeric data; Individual (micro) level

Universe Sampled:

Location of Units of Observation: National
Population: Polish and Lithuanian nationals working in the UK in 2004-2006

Methodology:

Time Dimensions: Cross-sectional (one-time) study
Sampling Procedures: Purposive selection/case studies; Volunteer sample
Questionnaire sent to Workers Registration Scheme participants who had requested TUC leaflet
Number of Units: 508 individuals
Method of Data Collection: Postal survey; Self-completion
Weighting: No weighting used

Language(s) of Written Materials:

Study Description: English
Study Documentation: English

Access:

Access Conditions: The depositor has specified that registration is required and standard conditions of use apply.
