A standard methodology has been implemented to overcome these four challenges, and to derive a consistent population time series 1991-2001, with age detail (single year of age or quinary ages), sex and ethnic group. These population estimates are made available using the 2001 Census geography for each district, ward and Output Area in England and Wales. The methods have focused on ensuring consistency with the latest population estimates from ONS for 1991 and 2001.

Further information can be found on the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research web page and the ESRC Award web page.

Main Topics:

Mid-1991 and mid-2001 population estimates by single year of age, sex and ethnic group for sub-national areas (Districts, Wards and Output Areas) in England and Wales.

Coverage:

Dates of Fieldwork: June 1991 - June 2001
Country: England and Wales
Spatial Units: Electoral Wards/Divisions (England);Electoral Divisions (Wales);Enumeration Districts (1991);Enumeration Districts (2001);Output Areas (2001)
Observation Units: Individuals
Kind of Data: Numeric data; Individual (micro) level

Universe Sampled:

Location of Units of Observation: National
Population: Individuals present at the 1991 and 2001 Census (England and Wales).

Methodology:

Time Dimensions: Cross-sectional (one-time) study
Sampling Procedures: No sampling (total universe)
Method of Data Collection: Compilation or synthesis of existing material
Data Sources: The original Estimating with Confidence (EwC) data are copyright of the EwC project which was funded by the ESRC, award number H519255028.

The research uses 1991 and 2001 Censuses, the National Statistics Postcode Directory (NSPD) and GIS boundary data obtained via MIMAS CASWEB and EDINA UKBORDERS which are academic services supported by ESRC and JISC.

The Census, official Mid-Year Estimates, NSPD and vital statistics data for England and Wales have been provided by the Office for National Statistics and the digital boundary data by Ordnance Survey.
