ARCHIVE DOCUMENTATION STUDY NO: 4320 STUDY TITLE: OPCS Survey of Psychiatric Morbidity Among Prisoners in England and Wales, 1997 Data and documentation received: ------------------------------- The dataset was received December 2000 from the Office for National Statistics, Social Survey Division, London. The data were received in SPSS 9.0 portable file format, documentation in MS Word and hard copy format. Validation and conversion: -------------------------- Data and documentation have been thoroughly checked for completeness and accuracy. All variables are named and values labelled where appropriate, and are easily identifiable from the documentation. Hard copy documentation and Word files scanned/converted to Adobe Acrobat PDF format using Adobe Capture 1.01 (hard copy) and Adobe Exchange 3.0 (Word files). All documentation was compiled into a nine-volume User Guide, fully bookmarked, with an index file for ease of navigation. Summary of value-added outputs: ------------------------------- See above. Constraints on the reliability and/or usability of the data: ------------------------------------------------------------ During initial file checking, it was noted that the SPSS file contained three low-level employment variables - occt, occd and indd. These string variables include very specific individual information about employment and work prior to prison sentence - occupational titles (occt), occupational descriptions (occd) and industry descriptions (indd). This information, used in conjunction with other variables in the file, could have resulted in the possible identification of individual respondents. Therefore, the UK Data Archive has agreed with the depositor to suppress these three variables from the dataset available to secondary users. As there are plenty of other variables in the file covering employment and occupations, such as industry code, 3-digit SOC code, employment status before prison, etc., the removal of occt, occd and indd from the file should not unduly limit the usefulness of the data. The variable lists in the documentation have been amended to note that the variables occt, occd and indd are missing from the Archive dataset, but it is possible they may be referred to elsewhere in the User Guide, and in the published report. Any outstanding problems or queries: ------------------------------------ None noted, but see section above. Technical report recommended/essential: --------------------------------------- It is recommended that users purchase the published report for this survey.
