UK DATA ARCHIVE DOCUMENTATION 3804 General Household Survey 1996-1997 Data Archive processing standards --------------------------------- The data were processed to the UK Data Archive's 'A' standard. A rigorous and comprehensive series of checks was carried out to ensure the quality of the data and documentation. The most important procedures were as follows. Firstly, checks were made that the number of cases and variables matched the depositor's records. Secondly, checks were made that all variables had variable labels and all nominal (categorical) variables had value labels. Where possible, either with reference to the documentation and/or in communication with the depositor, absent labels were created. Thirdly, logical checks were performed to ensure that nominal (categorical) variables had values within the range defined (either by value labels or in the depositor's documentation). Lastly, any data or documentation that breached confidentiality rules were altered or suppressed to preserve anonymity. All notable and/or outstanding problems discovered are detailed under the Data and documentation problems heading below. Data and documentation problems ------------------------------- Please note that the file names represent a certain naming convention. Each one of them is the table name or group variables name given in the database. However, the documentation displays the variables in alphabetical order. All files are properly labelled for easier use. Due to a request by the depositor, the following variables contained in househld (Record 1) have been set to missing -9 for anonymity purposes: RHA - Regional Health Authorities ACORN - Acorn codes COUNTY - County codes NEWLA - New LA codes (alpha numeric) DHA - District Health Authorities & SHA's (alpha numeric) The following variables have been derived from REG2 REG1M1 REG1M2 REG1M3 REG2M1 REG2M2 REG2M3 REG2M4 REG2M5 REG5 REG17 REGMTNMT REGPENS REGSPORT Users should note that the data file sports.por contains the physical activities variables, whereas the file activity.por contains the sports activities variables. New edition information ----------------------- A household.weighting variable, WEIGHT96, was supplied retrospectively by the depositor during July 2002. This has been added to the household file, househld.por. The documentation remains unchanged, but further information may be found about GHS weighting at: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/lib - (search under 'Contents'). Notes from data delivery and post-order corrections --------------------------------------------------- As a result of a user enquiry, 2 additional variables were supplied by the data depositor in September 2002 to allow the user to identify the month and year of the interview: HMONTH and HYEAR. These were added to the PERSON file.
