The objectives of this research project were:
1. To make use of the 1991 Census of Population data on qualifications, occupation and industry, alongside data from other sources, to provide a new body of statistical information on the distribution and characteristics of the highly qualified in Britain.
2. To contribute to an enhanced understanding of the distribution (in occupational, industrial and spatial terms), of people with higher-level qualifications, thereby informing labour market and local economic development theory and policy.

Main Topics:

Higher level qualifications by occupation and industry.

Coverage:

 Time Period Covered: 1991
Country: England and Wales
Spatial Units: Wards
Observation Units: Individuals

Universe Sampled:

Location of Units of Observation: National
Population: Residents of Wards (1991 Census) in England and Wales with higher level qualifications.

Methodology:

Time Dimensions: Cross-sectional (one-time) study
Sampling Procedures: No sampling (total universe)
Method of Data Collection: Compilation or synthesis of existing material
Data Sources: Data used were taken from the 1991 Census of Population : Local Base Statistics (held at The Data Archive under GN:33259) and the 2 per cent Individual Sample of Anonymised Records.

Language(s) of Written Materials:

Study Description: English
Study Documentation: English

Access:

Access Conditions: The depositor has specified that registration is required and standard conditions of use apply.
