The original time diaries have been recoded in a way which enables comparisons to be drawn with the survey conducted by the BBC in 1974/5 (SN: 1425) and with the 1966 multi-national study.

Main Topics:

Variables
Respondents kept diaries for a whole week (Sunday-Saturday), entering their main activity for each half-hour between 6.30 a.m. and midnight. Information was collected on respondent's age, sex, social grade, school-leaving age, occupation, family type and radio and TV ownership. The respondents' activities have been classified into over 100 activity codes, with additional allowance being made for the location of the activities (at home or away from home) and for viewing and listening secondary activities.

Coverage:

Dates of Fieldwork: 09 April 1961 - 22 April 1961
Country: Great Britain
Spatial Units: No information recorded
Observation Units: Individuals; Families/households

Universe Sampled:

Location of Units of Observation: National
Population: Adults (15 years and over, not in full-time education) in Great Britain, excluding people living in institutions and people possessing neither a radio nor a TV set

Methodology:

Time Dimensions: Cross-sectional (one-time) study
Sampling Procedures: One-stage stratified or systematic random sample
Number of Units: 4026 (target) 2402 (obtained)
Method of Data Collection: Diaries

Language(s) of Written Materials:

Study Description: English
Study Documentation: English

Access:

Access Conditions: The depositor has specified that registration is required and standard conditions of use apply.
