How to access data
Access to the Data Catalogue, including online documentation such as questionnaires, does not require registration. However,
to download any data you must register. Access restrictions may apply to some users/usages and details can be found in the relevant
catalogue record.
Note: only users at UK institutions of higher and further education (UK HE/FE) can access ESDS International macrodata or data from the
ESRC Census Programme.
The information below is a step-by-step guide to accessing data.

Are you from a UK university or college (a UK institution of higher or further education)?

You will already have a username and password issued to you by your institution. Use this to log in using the
Login link at the top of every web page.

If you do not have a username and password issued by a UK HE/FE institution, you will need to apply
for a UK Data Archive username and password.
When this has been supplied to you, log in using the Login
link at the top of every web page.

After you have logged in you should complete a 'Registration form' and an account will be created for you.
To register:
- Complete the online registration form. If after logging in you are presented with a 'Registration' page, follow
the link to the 'Registration form'.
- Agree the End User Licence (EUL) outlining the terms
and conditions of use of the data.
- Follow any instructions in the confirmation email you will receive to complete registration.

As you are a registered user you can access the data as follows:
- Locate the datasets you require either by using the Data Catalogue
or one of the other methods described in Finding data.
- Click 'Download/Order' within the Data Catalogue, or tick the relevant check box where indicated, and click 'Go'.
- Register a new usage of the data, or choose from any previous usages.
If you are creating a new usage, enter a short summary (minimum 30 words) describing your intended use of the data.
Information entered here may be sent in usage reports to the data depositors and funders of UK Data Archive/ESDS services.
- Click 'Add datasets' and the selected dataset will be added to your usage.
- Agree any special conditions associated with the selected datasets. These will appear in the 'Status' column.
- Select 'Download', and then the download format, or
explore online by clicking the 'Nesstar' link, if available, or
check the 'Other media' box to request the data via other media, e.g. CD.
- If you are a UK user, you can request data from non-UK archives. See
'Ordering data from a non-UK archive' below.

Ordering data from a non-UK archive
- Log in to your account.
- Select 'Usage details'.
- Click on the title of a previously registered usage, or register a new one.
- On the 'Datasets for usage' page, select the 'Order or view previous orders for datasets from a non-UK archive that do not have a study number
in our online catalogue'.
- Select an archive from the dropdown list of archives.
- Select the preferred format for the data, e.g. SPSS, Stata.
- Select the media for delivery.
- Enter the originating archive study title and number (if known) and any additional comments.
- Click 'Submit' to place an order for this data. A confirmation message will then be displayed.
- Select 'Order History' to view details of all outstanding orders.
Online analysis
A large and growing number of studies are available to analyse using online data analysis tools. Where this is
the case, a clickable link in the relevant online catalogue will take you to the relevant online data analysis tool. More
