Guide to freely available international data resources

This guide is intended to be used as a resource discovery tool for additional internationally available data and information resources. It is split into six sections:

  1. Selected Sources of freely available international data: This section has a list of web sites which provide freely available international data.
  2. National data archives and sources of international micro data: These links provide access to the web sites of a number of national data archives via clickable maps and links to other sources of international micro data.
  3. National statistics institutes: A comprehensive list of national statistics office web sites in alphabetical country order. These sites are most useful for individual country information for example on the economy, population and society at national and local level.
  4. International organisations: Links to the web sites of major International Organisations such as the United Nations (UN), World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
  5. Regional organisations: This section provides a list of region specific information and data resource web sites for the following areas: Africa, Americas, Asia, Oceania, Europe, European Union.
  6. Resources on methodology, standards and good practice in international data: Web sites containing information on statistical, data dissemination and good practice standards are listed in this section.
  7. Data visualisation: This section contains a list of resources that contain interactive visual interfaces.

1. Selected sources of freely available international data

Intergovernmental Organisations

WorldBank GenderStats (http://devdata.worldbank.org/genderstats/)- a database of gender indicators, basic demographic data, population dynamics, labour force structure, education and health statistics.

The World Bank Governance and anti-corruption group (www.worldbank.org/wbi/governance) disseminates a range of publications and data on national government and business environments, including:

  • The Interactive Inventory of Datasets/Empirical Tools (http://go.worldbank.org/W0DI8LZMD0), This is illustrated by the worldwide aggregate Governance Indicators Dataset, generated by researchers at the World Bank, comprising six different governance components for about 200 countries.
  • The World Business Environment Survey (http://info.worldbank.org/governance/wbes/) a survey of over 10,000 firms in 80 countries that examines a wide range of interactions between firms and the state
  • Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS) Interactive Dataset (http://info.worldbank.org/governance/beeps/) a survey of managers and owners of firms across the countries of Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and Turkey designed to generate comparative measurements of the quality of governance, the investment climate and the competitive environment

World Bank ICT at a Glance (http://go.worldbank.org/GAG7BVEGU0)- key data on information and communications technologies.

World Bank Country at a Glance (http://go.worldbank.org/0LJX63EF90) provides a PDF file for every country on its social and economic development over the last three decades.

World Bank EdStats (http://go.worldbank.org/ITABCOGIV1)- the World Bank’s database of education statistics.

World Bank HNPStats (go.worldbank.org/N2N84RDV00) - health, nutrition, and population statistics country by country.

International Household Survey Network is a partnership of international organizations seeking to improve the availability, quality and use of survey data in developing countries. It has a catalogue of surveys and censuses conducted in developing countries.

World Health Organization Statistical Information System (www.who.int/whosis/en/)- the WHO gateway for health and health-related epidemiological and statistical information.

UN Statistical division (http://unstats.un.org/unsd/databases.htm) - access to a range of freely available UN databases including the Millennium Indicators Database (http://millenniumindicators.un.org/unsd/mi/mi_goals.asp), Social Indicators (http://unstats.un.org/unsd/demographic/products/socind/) , which covers a wide range of subject matter fields such as education, housing, health and water, Population Statistics (http://unstats.un.org/unsd/demographic/sconcerns/densurb/default.htm) and a Good Practices database (http://unstats.un.org/unsd/dnss/gp/searchgp.aspx) on official statistics methodology. The National Accounts Main Aggregates ( http://unstats.un.org/unsd/snaama) database contains a complete set of time series from 1970 onwards of main national accounts aggregates for more than 200 countries and territories. In addition to the values of national accounts statistics, it contains analytical indicators and ratios related to economic structure and development, country profiles and metadata.

UNCTAD's World Investment Report (http://www.unctad.org/Templates/Page.asp?intItemID=1465) The World Investment Report focuses on trends in foreign direct investment (FDI) worldwide, at the regional and country levels. It provides information regarding global FDI flows, stocks, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, and investment treaties based on year and country.

UNECE Gender Statistics Database (http://www.unece.org/stats/gender/) , the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s central database for sex-disaggregated social data.

FAOSTAT (http://faostat.fao.org/), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s food, forestry, fisheries and agricultural statistics gateway.

UNESCO’s Institute for Statistics (www.uis.unesco.org/) provides global and internationally comparable statistics on education, science, technology, culture and communication.

UNICEF’s Monitoring and Statistics (www.unicef.org/statistics/index.html) - economic and social statistics on children worldwide.

UNIDO’s Selected Country Industrial Statistics (http://www.unido.org/index.php?id=4879) - a country by country snapshot of current key industrial indicators.

SourceOECD (www.sourceoecd.org/), the OECD’s online statistics library, is a subscription service but it does contain some selected freely available datasets. For example, Education at a Glance (www.oecd.org/document/7/0,2340,en_2649_34515_33712135_1_1_1_1,00.html) provides internationally comparable data on key aspects of education systems.

IMF World Economic Outlook (www.imf.org/external/ns/cs.aspx?id=28) provides worldwide data on GDP, GDP per capita, inflation, output gaps and net capital flows.

The Joint BIS-IMF-OECD-World Bank statistics on external debt (www.bis.org/publ/r_debt.htm)- The Bank for International Settlements, the IMF, the OECD and the World Bank provide a joint quarterly release of the external debt of 176 developing and transition countries, together with data on international reserves.

Eurostat (http://europa.eu.int/comm/eurostat/)- the European Union Statistical gateway with many freely available data.

Eurydice (www.eurydice.org/)- the information network on education in Europe provides comparable information on education systems and policies throughout Europe.

Selected Energy Statistics (www.iea.org/Textbase/stats/index.asp)- free environmental and energy data from the International Energy Agency

International Labour Organisation Key Indicators of the Labour Market (KILM) (http://www.ilo.org/public/english/employment/strat/kilm/index.htm) - The KILM programme was launched by the ILO in 1999 to complement existing data collection programmes and to improve the dissemination of data of the key elements of the world’s labour markets. The KILM dataset comprises a core set of labour market indicators that allow new employment trends to be analysed and monitored.

Academic

ESDS International (www.esds.ac.uk/international/)- a range of international micro and macro datasets such as the OECD Main Economic Indicators, National Statistics Time Series Data, Eurobarometers, World Values Surveys and European Values Surveys.

Penn World Tables (http://pwt.econ.upenn.edu/php_site/pwt_index.php)- the Penn World Table provides purchasing power parity and national income accounts converted to international prices for 168 countries for some or all of the years 1950-2000. Expenditure entries are denominated in a common set of prices in a common currency so that real quantity comparisons can be made, both between countries and over time. It also provides information about relative prices within and between countries, as well as demographic data and capital stock estimates.

Oxford Latin American Economic History Database (OxLAD) (http://oxlad.qeh.ox.ac.uk/) - an online database that contains statistical series for a wide range of economic and social indicators covering twenty countries in Latin America for the period 1900-2000.

Council of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA) Data Portal (www.cessda.org) The CESSDA Data Portal provides an interface to datasets hosted by social science data archives across Europe. The information within the portal can be viewed in any of nine languages and can be search by a multilingual thesaurus.

Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (www.cses.org)is a collaborative program of cross-national research among election study teams in over fifty states.

Centre for Comparative European Survey Data (CCESD) Information System (http://www.ccesd.ac.uk) Enables users to search the full text of survey questionnaires by survey dataset and search across survey datasets for all questions asked in selected countries

UK Government

The Bank of England Monetary & Financial Statistics Division (www.bankofengland.co.uk/statistics/index.htm) has a regularly updated web site of UK financial data. Many of these statistics appear in the National Statistics Time Series Data, but the Bank's web pages contain extra detail, particularly on banking, the money markets (including the gilt repo market) and micro-economic data on individual UK banks and building societies.

HM Revenue and Customs uktradeinfo (www.uktradeinfo.com/) web site provides data collected by HM Revenue and Customs from returns and reports required with every export and import consignment.

National Statistics Online (www.statistics.gov.uk) is the home of the UK Office of National Statistics with a huge range of freely available data on Britain's economy, population and society at national and local level. This site also contains links to the Time Series Data through the National Statistics' own web interface.

Other

CIA World Factbook (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/) - frequently updated maps and country profiles, including information on geography, demography, economy, communication, transport, defence, governance and transnational issues organised by country.

Developed by the Norwegian Social Science Data Services, the MacroDataGuide (http://www.nsd.uib.no/macrodataguide/) is a user’s guide to researchers and students worldwide in search of high quality data for social science research. It informs not only on which data are out there and where they can be found, it also provides a qualitative assessement of these resources.

Asian Development Bank statistics (www.adb.org/Statistics/) - key indicators for developing member countries, poverty and development indicators, and environmental statistics.

World Intellectual Property Organization Industrial property statistics (www.wipo.org/ipstats/en/). Annual statistics on industrial property relating to relate to patents, utility models, marks, industrial designs, plant varieties and microorganisms, by country .

The Organization of American States Foreign Trade Information System (http://www.sice.oas.org/). Trade data and information on tariffs, competition policy and other trade issues, country by country.

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) (www.sipri.se/). The authoritative resource on global security, military spending, conflict and conflict resolution. The SIPRI Database on Military Expenditure(http://www.sipri.org/contents/milap/milex/mex_database1.html) contains time series data on military spending over the last ten years for 160 countries. Their Database on National Export Control Systems (http://www.sipri.org/contents/expcon/db1.html) contains summary information on export controls and proscribed destinations by country. The SIPRI Facts on International Relations and Security Trends (http://first.sipri.org/) contains individual country data on nuclear and conventional weapon holdings, arms production and trade, major armed conflicts and other key security issues.

Global Education Database (http://qesdb.cdie.org/ged/index.html) is is a repository of international education statistics compiled from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS).

Nationmaster.com (http://www.nationmaster.com/) provides the facility to generate statistics, maps and graphs from such sources as the CIA World Factbook, United Nations, World Health Organization, World Bank, World Resources Institute, UNESCO, UNICEF and OECD.

International Comparisons in Education (http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/international/Index.asp?IntSection=2) develops a system of indicators for cross-national comparisons in education.

European Election Database (http://extweb3.nsd.uib.no/civicactivecms/opencms/civicactive/en/) provides an on-line database of aggregated election statistics from European Parliament elections.
