Guide to European Election Studies
European Election Studies (EES) have taken place for six of the seven European
parliamentary elections since 1979, the most recent being 2009 (data not yet available). The exception
is 1984 – though a number of EES-type questions were put to the October 1984
Eurobarometer respondents (Euro-Barometer 22, archived at the Economic and
Social Data Service (ESDS) under SN 2816), allowing the time series for some
questions to remain unbroken.

The format for each EES is a core survey – maintaining comparability over time –
and a thematic module, chosen for its pertinence to the election. The focus of
the core survey is on electoral, social and political behaviour, and includes
citizens' perceptions of, and preferences about, the EU
political regime, and people’s evaluations of EU political performance.
